My son is 8, and is struggling with sounding out words when reading. Interestingly enough, when I ask him to spell the word out loud, all of a sudden he knows how to say it. Looking at the letters stumps him, but spelling it out loud helps him.

Anyone else had this experience? Combined with still reversing b's and d's (even capital ones!) and some other processing type issues he's had when he was younger(could POINT to the "orange triangle" every time, but couldn't come up with the word "orange" when you asked what color the triangle was) should I be concerned? I've mentioned it to pediatricians, mental health specialists, etc, and nobody has ever had an answer for me.

I don't have a problem with him being a late reader, necessarily, so long as I'm not missing something that he needs.

Well, I always tend to think that mom knows best. If YOU think there is something not quite right with the way your son is processing things, then you should trust your instincts. Perhaps you could find a developmental pediatrician who will take your concerns seriously and can help you figure it out. Your ds is just now at the age where a more accurate diagnosis can be made, so the timing is good.
