...with a great big joke book???
ANSWER: ~hours of entertainment and never-ending joketelling ~ 
I picked up this book at the library the other day. I had walked past it the previous day as it looked real corny, but this time picked it up and really enjoyed the couple jokes I read.
Jokelopedia: the Biggest, Best, Silliest, Dumbest Joke Book Ever
My 10 year old is loving it. He finds it impossible to read the book silently to himself...  so I've been the recipient of hours of jokes. I've noticed that this is a great opportunity to do some language arts with him. With a few jokes I find he really didn't understand it though he laughs like it is funny. It's because of the play on words, definitions he doesn't know, or subtle nuances he hasn't learned yet. So I explain it and we can talk about it. And then there are all those he gets very clearly and I have him explain why it is funny, which gives him an opportunity to show his understanding.
I'm realizing all the great word-play language concepts involved and how good it is for language arts study.
-understanding that a single word can have different meanings, knowing those meanings
-recognizing homophones & homonyms and how when used incorrectly they can be humorous
-using a synonym can add a funny double meaning
-understanding and recognizing hyperbole
-identifying a play on word
-rhyming words and patterns
Now he is also making up some of his own jokes and I've been impressed with the thought process and connections he is making. It’s fun when made-up jokes get beyond random goofy and actually have humor and word play.
This particular book, of course, is full of corny jokes, puns, riddles...also many which I find more "sophisticated" and really quite clever. It does have the requisite "gross out/potty/flatulence" section so be aware. But overall they really aren't bad and it's only a few pages. It also has highlighted sections covering different comedians through the years from Lucille Ball & Marx Bros. to Will Ferrell & Ben Stiller (even though the real comedy of some of those newer comedians isn't appropriate the little write-ups they have in this book are fine.) The Amazon reviews mention (the couple negative ones) mention a practical joke section they didn't think appropriate - I couldn't find one in the book.
Anyone else used jokes for LA? Do you have other favorite joke/riddle compilations?

joke books are VERY popular around here we don't use them formally, but the children really take to them and just like you said, it really helps them to understand words in a deeper way.

That sounds like something my boys would like too! Just requested it from the library. Maybe our boys could have a joke-off when next they see each other!

You are brilliant, Mary! I never considered all the aspects of language arts.
I just always thought joke books were a rite of passage. You have to provide good joke books so the child learns how to compose a good riddle or knock-knock joke.
Thanks for the recommendation. We don't have a 10yo boy, but I know he'll still love it.

Yes, Lisa, that sounds great. They could be each other's audience and save me from additional listening hours. Having a son who would never do a public poetry reading/presentation, I wonder if he would do so for jokes. Maybe we could have comedy club presentation day...hmmm...
Jenn, any child that enjoys word play would enjoy it, doesn't need to be 10.

Mary, you won't be surprised to know that this was one of Aiden's favorite books! When I saw your post, I asked him to dig it off his shelf so that Ian can read it. The three boys have been glued to it ever since! Thanks so much.

I wish my library carried it! Noah has really gotten into joke books lately. I have it in my amazon cart, though, and I never would have thought of including jokes as part of grammar and language arts.

I just called to reserve this book from my library, and the librarian came back after pulling it from the shelf and said "This is a well-loved book. It is quite worn."

It is really interesting to see the different levels of "getting" jokes based on age, experience, and I think temperament. Aiden, our sanguine "gets" jokes in a way that other temperaments don't.
Mary,the practical jokes are scattered throughout the book. Aiden thinks that they are pretty tame...and all the boys know NOT to play them on me - my startle reflex is severe  .
I called the house today and a ds answered the phone *whispering,* "Hello, this is the home of the very sensitive ear drums. How can I help you." Oh my...
