Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This narration by my 10 yo ds served two purposes-retelling the trip, and practicing spanish!

My Trip to a Miami Wedding

Last week I took a fun trip to my Uncle Pablo’s wedding. It was in Miami, which is a place where a lot of people speak Spanish. Every time we go there, it gives me a chance to practice my Español.
On the day we left, we were supposed to wake up early, but that did not work out how we planned. We got ready and drove all the way to West Palm to stop for dinner at the house of my abuelo and abuela. We call them Mami and Papi. It was a long drive and when we got there it was nearly midnight. Then we still had to drive down to Miami and get a hotel. We watched T.V. for a while before falling asleep.
In the morning we ate breakfast at Don Pan, which means “mister bread” (and it fits the name, too considering all the pastellitos and pasteles and galletas they had on display!). After breakfast we stopped by to pick up the tuxedos for my hermano, Eddy and myself. Then we went swimming at the hotel pool which was fun. We dried off and then changed into nicer clothes and got ready for the rehearsal.
The rehearsal went well, but everyone was late. My Dad, who is Cuban-American, says it is because they are all on “Cuban time” which means you come about an hour late. I was in the wedding court because my Tio Pablo is my Padrino, or Godfather. After the rehearsal we went to the rehearsal dinner at a restaurant called Miami Havana At the restaurant we were offered a choice of ether pescado or pollo.
Since it was Friday and lent we all chose pescado. It was delicioso! For dessert we had a pudding called Natilla. I had four bowls full it was so good! Afterward we went to the hotel to sleep.
When we woke up in the morning it was the day of the wedding. We had some time to get food so we went to Starbucks where I had ½ a marble cake slice and 1 ½ slices of double chocolate loaf cake which was my favorite. Mom and Dad had café con leche and Jenny and I had jugo de naranja. We finished our breakfast and then dad and I got hair cuts while Mom went shopping for cool stuff for la escuela. We had just enough time to get ready for the wedding. I put on my smashing, dashing James Bond tuxedo and Jenny, Emily, and Mom wore pretty new dresses. Then we got in the car and went to the wedding.
The wedding was at Iglesia St. Augustine. Everyone who was in the court lined up at the back of the church. Since I was a groomsman I escorted my prima, Anna, who was a bridesmaid, down the aisle and then the rest of the court entered. Last to enter was Elena the esposa escorted by her Padre. She looked magnifica! My Tio Pablo, the esposo, looked so happy.
There are some things different about an Hispanic wedding than a typical American wedding. First of all, the priest at the wedding was Elena’s Tio, the Bishop from Guatemala. He spoke only español. Another thing is that the madres put a double rosario around the necks of both el esposo y la esposa. Then the sisters wrapped a lace velo around the heads and shoulders of the couple. Another thing different thing is that the couple went over to pray at an icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The last thing different was Pablo gave Elena the arras, which is a small bag of coins to symbolize that Pablo will provide for Elena and their home.
After the wedding we went to the reception which was awesome. We had dinner, wedding cake, and then danced the night away to salsa music.
I wish Pablo and Elena lots of luck and I can’t wait until my next Miami wedding.

Thank you, Ladies! I will pass the complements on to ds- he will be thrilled. He really thrives on this kind of feedback.
