I'm so excited I have to share!! I have mentioned before that a couple of my friends' children and mine get together and have Writing Club once a week, we have been doing this for a year now.
For the last term I have felt our teenagers need more direction than our loose format, they are ready for more formal essay techniques and really need to work on editing. I have been praying about this and also following leads. Searching amongst the community certain there must be some good soul passionate enough about language and skilled enough to pass on their expertise.
Today I rang our local highschool asking for retired teachers and our local community college asking for leads. Anyhow one of the local nuns was suggested to me.
I rang the convent and asked Sister if anyone would be willing and able. They got back to me with a teacher!!
Sr J is the archivist, taught for 50 years at a highschool and university level!!!! Oh happy, happy dance

Oh wow....my official sin for the day is envy and it's not even 9am yet!
What a coup! I'd be stoked. (And you know, I never would have thought to call the schools about retired teachers....thanks for the great idea! I am sure I shall utilise it in the near future.)

Thanks for sharing my excitement I'm still so thrilled
I'm not too sure about the Nun part as the Sister here are rather um... Trying to work out what to say politely if she insists the children call her by her first name.

I totally understand needing to do this now.
I think the sisters are teaching at the local Catholic school, could be a reason for not taking the dc on.

Progressive? Really though? I have never met a Nun who was happy to be called by her first name....although, I have met a few that were okay with us calling them Sis..(well we were impertinent 17 year olds... )
Just tell her you believe in old fashioned values like addressing our elders with the respectful titles they deserve.

Wonderful news, Erin.
I think I'll use that idea in the future. Mind you most of our nuns are a little umm too. Lovely, passionate women, but we just don't share the same theology.

Just arrived home from our first lesson and thought I'd share how it went. When we arrived Sister J took us for a tour through the archives (even with 9 children under 11 as well). Our Mother House was build in 1885 so it is very beautiful and the archive room was very interesting. Little do my children know they are about to detour on a local Catholic history study
We then left the children with Sister and betook ourselves off with the younger ones to the library. When we returned Sister seemed very happy, told us she asked the children why they had chosen their topics (they had chosen a wide range of essay research topics with us the week before) and gave them some direction in essay work!!
They children told me they are happy with her, liked her and felt confident that she would be a good teacher. One big surprise was, she began with prayer!! So it's looking positive
