Hi Moms~
After trying CHC phonics with my dd and finding it seemed to have huge gaps in it, I decided to go with "Teach Your Child in 100 Easy Lessons."
I am struggling with the "orthography". In that...we are on lesson 7, and she is doing very well. The issues she had with CHC (stopping between sounds persistently) is not a factor here. They resolve that well.
HOWEVER, because the orthography is completely phonetic and not focused on spelling, she now thinks that the word "see" is spelled "se". Previously, she had been teaching herself, essentially, how to read and spell...with words families I made for her, etc.
So...while this program is resolving the "stopping" issue between sounds, it has created a new problem: spelling and actually seeing the word for what it is.
I know this is resolved later on in the book...around lesson 80? But I feel like this will instill bad habits in her...since she is so methodical and literal.
Any thoughts?

I did this with my oldest and it wasn't a problem. I did think it was odd too.
100 Easy Lessons was very effective and he's an excellent reader. I did switch programs only because if asked if he could read he would say no!?!?!... even though he could read whole paragraphs in EZ Lessons!! I wanted him to be more excited and that didn't seem to be it *for him.*

I have used 100 EL with 4 of our children and this has never been a problem. I am currently using it with our 6 year old. I find it is better to do spelling after the program.
She could do word families like the at, ot, og, it, etc. if you want to do spelling staying away from those words that don't really follow common phonetic rules like was, see, etc.
I love 100 EZL and our children are all really good readers and good spellers.
One of our kids struggled with spelling for a while but is a really good speller now.

Good for you all that you've had good success with 100 EZ Lessons, I have not . Both my older girls hated it by lesson 3 or 4. Oh well.
One thing about word families. We signed up with St. Thomas Aquinas Academy this year and I recently had a planning meeting over the phone. They brought up an interesting reason for not using word families that makes a lot of sense to me. It make the child focus on the end of the word and kind of disturbs that left to right rhythm. I know my oldest does this. She still will at times focus on the middle or end of a word she's not sure of and try to figure it out. I have to refocus her attention to the beginning and guide her through sounding out L to R.
When she told me this I thought "aha" it made so much sense. She also explained a little game/exercise to focus them on the L to R. You write our the word you are sounding out like this:
t
t r
tr
tr i
tri
tri p
trip
Cover it up with a piece of paper and work your way down. If you have a word where two letters make a single sound, like ck, then you would use them the same as a single letter.
Don't know if that will help anyone, I just thought it was very interesting and useful especially with my oldest.

Maybe I'm too late chiming in...I've been toying with the idea of using CHC's LSLF with my 3rd child, so it's interesting to hear that you found some gaps in it. I used 100EZ Lessons with my first, and found a few gaps as well, but later on in the book (near the end). So I also went through Phonics Pathways with him. By the end of 1st grade, he could read anything, and he's always been a reasonably good speller. Then my 2nd started the process, and I intentionally used a combination of 100 EZ Lessons and Phonics Pathways. It is more difficult for her, but I think it would be no matter what - my ds happens to be a whiz at reading, and my dd seems to have some dyslexic tendancies.
Either way, I teach reading separately from writing and spelling (and I teach it first). I don't really expect my kids to write anything (aside from copywork for handwriting)until they're pretty far along in the reading process. So in the case of your daughter who is reading the word "see," I probably would hold off on expecting her to write it (or much of anything) until later in the game.
Phonics Pathways is more pure phonics that EZ Lessons though, and it goes rule by rule. I don't use it specifically for spelling, but we do learn the spelling rules as we go. So later in the game, we have some rules to refer back to.

I have used 100Easy Lessons. It is a good way to get them started reading and the spelling wasn't an issue. I don't ever finish 100 Easy Lessons, about 2/3 of the way in I switch over to Pathway Readers and that has worked well for four of the five that I have taught to read so far. I will be starting my baby out on it this summer!

Hey Maggie! We are on our 3rd child using 100EZ and love it. We use it until around 3/4 of the way through (depending on child) and then start on CHCs little folks readers. These end up being VERY EASY readers for them at that point, but the format and size is great for them building confidence and reading at a faster rate.
It is a kind of funny format, but boy does that book work! I really think it does a great job with comprehension, too, by the way, because of the picture discussion.
Ok, sorry, I am a big 100EZ nerd.... I could go on and on....
Glad it is working out for you and your sweet little one! How fun!
