Hi!
I know I remember reading (maybe a year or two ago now?) that some of you use both of these texts together. If you are someone who does that, can you share how you do it? Do you do one text for one semester, and then switch to the other text for the other semester? Do you do one text part of the week and the other text for the remaining days? I am looking very seriously at using CHC again for my spine for two of my dc who will be in 5th and 2nd/3rd next year. While I like Lang. of God, I really love the combination of language arts skills taught in PLL/ILL, so I would like to make use of both books, if possible.

I am thinking along those same lines... I know my ds would really like PLL (loves pictures), and yet the CHC books are so gentle that I think using both would be very doable. It would add some variety at the very least and keep interest levels up over time.
Do I need to do both? That is another question...

I am really wondering the same thing! This year, I had my two dd's in 4th and 1st/2nd do all of LoG and some portions of ILL and PLL, but it felt rushed, and I don't like to be rushed! I am looking for a better way of doing this for next year

I've used PLL in grade two and three doing no more then two or three lessons in a week.
What I've done is to subsitute the PLL lessons for the lesson closest to them in CHC's lesson plans.
Picture lessons include art appreciation, Reproduction includes reading comprehension , most of the Observations lessons count towards nature study or science, Memorization selections are the same as memory verses....
To demonstrate I'll go over the first two weeks of grade two.
Week one:
PLL Lesson one is a picture lesson requiring no writing, I make a note on the week 1 lesson pages that I wil be using it instead of the Art Masterpiece that week.
PLL Lesson two is copying and dication so I'll note that the child can choose to work on it instead of the handwriting copywork on Monday and Tuesday of week one as well as Thursday's dictation.
Lesson three is a grammar lesson so it will either be used for Friday's grammar or skipped depending on if I've noticed confusion on this point in speech or writing.
This brings me to the end of week one.
Week Two:
PLL lesson four is a memorization selection so at the beginning of the week I'll read it to my child and then he or she will decide if they wish to memorize it or one of the memory gems.
Lesson five is a Observation Lesson- I've decided that Observation lessons are to be noted down in the relevant sections of Easy as 1,2,3 so I skip it. However the PLL lesson 12 was noted as possibly fitting this weeks science topic, so I'll see if it will work with my other material.
Lesson six is straightforward dictation so it's scheduled for Thursday grammar.
and so on...

Thanks! It really helps to hear how you have integrated the two.
From reading, it sounds like you did LOG on the the days you did not use PLL? OR did you skip LOG and just work PLL/ILL into the CHC plans?
Your plan sounds like it flowed very smoothly and worked well for your family.

Normally we would simply do the LOG lessons as scheduled in the lesson plans.
I avoided scheduling a PLL lesson that required a lot of writing on the same day as a LOG lesson but conversation, observation, oral reproduction or memorization lessons might well be scheduled on the same day as a LOG lesson.
(PLL stands for Primary Language Lessons and ILL stands for Intermediate Language Lessons- Hillside - English and Composition )

Ekbell,
It sounds like you use CHC's lesson plans and most of the core and then adapt some lessons each week if you want to include PLL or other Charlotte Mason-like lessons... is that correct?
Those of you who used both this year, did you find LOG necessary for 2nd grade, or was it more to make sure you covered the basis? I am trying to keep things simple and already have PLL.

That's right.
I wouldn't say that both are necessary. It's more that I started with the CHC lesson plans & lOG and my children like them too much to completely change over. [my first rule of thumb - if it works and the children like it don't change it]

I started with LOG (used B-C) but then switched to PLL/ILL. Mainly it didn't seem like anything was sticking, the kids just did the workbook to get it done. There is so much variety in PLL/Ill that my kids really pay more attention. I think you'd be fine doing either one but both seems overkill to me.

I did end up doing ILL and PLL (I had one in 3rd and one in 5th this year) in combination with the Seton English workbooks and I thought it went well. Basically, I used the Seton workbooks for the straight grammar instruction and the ILL or PLL for all the other things it has to offer - the dictation, discussion, poetry, picture study, composition, copy work, etc. They really do complement each other, I found. I think that using the CHC LoG books would be a better idea than the Seton books, only because the Seton books contain almost too many exercises in them.

I forgot to add - we focused on the PLL/ILL during the first semester, and then did the workbooks during the second semester, but you could easily just do a few days of one and a few days of the other each week as well, whatever method works better for you!

I had a copy of Simply Grammar (Karen Adreola) given to me, and so I started out using that along with LOG from CHC.
That didn't work- they covered the same ground and it was dull to repeat the same points over and over. And the CHC book seemed (IMO) to present the material in a much more straightforward way.
I like the idea of doing the workbook one semester and then PLL/ILL the next. Maybe the problem for us was trying to do two programs together- plus I found the language in SG to be old-fashioned and a bit cumbersome.
