I'm looking for a website at which I can type in a word or issue and it will give me back a nice selection for copy work or dictation.
For example, if we were having trouble with weather vs whether and my child were 8 I could plug in that information. I would recieve back the Winnie the Pooh Weather Whether poem or even several things to choose from.
hmmm?

Well, Mimi, I was hoping you had already developed it and you'd let me use it!

Try Ambleside Online copywork project. This is a yahoo group that archives copywork. They use the booklist from AO so those are the books available with passages. This doesn't have a search like you are looking for but it has tons of passages that you can print out and have your child copy from books you are reading. HTH.

Rebecca,
I don't know of a website plug-in type program to recommend, but I do have a set of books I use this way to assist in finding specific words to target in copywork and dictation. Let me know if you're interested and I'll link you.

I like the site Quote Garden. You can browse or search any term and come up with a list of related quotes to choose from.
For example, here is what it came up with when I *browsed* for weather quotes:
weather quotes
and here is a bit of a different result when I *searched* "whether"
whether quotes
I think it would be an easy way to get what you are looking for.

I generally pull a lot of dictation and copywork from the children's literature or poetry, but occasionally I find myself coming up short, lacking in time to find something appropriate, or looking to provide extra practice with a challenging phoneme or word. I've been very pleased with Simply Charlotte Mason's Spelling Wisdom series. The quotes come from speeches, letters, poetry, literature, etc. They're quite beautiful!
MOST HELPFUL --> the extensive INDEX in the back of each of the books listing ALL THE WORDS introduced in that book, and every page/quote that word appears in. I can quickly look up "weather" and "whether" in the index and offer dictation lessons from those words.
Spelling Wisdom wrote:
All 6000 most-frequently-used English words included in these exercises are taken from A General Service List of English Words by Michael West (Longman, London 1953) and The Academic Word List by Coxhead (1998, 2000). We have also included more than 6,500 other words that we think well-educated children should know. These bonus words are in addition to those on the lists, making a total of more than 12,500 English words covered in the Spelling Wisdom series of books. |
