Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi.
I'm returning to the list after a long break. My intro is posted in Fireside Chat. It's great to be reconnected.

I was wondering, has anyone has ever tried using Dragon Naturallyspeaking software for typing their children's narrations? For those who are unfamiliar with it, it is a software program that allows you to speak into a microphone and it types out what you say for you. No typing involved! The reason I ask is I struggle to find time to sit at the computer typing my childrens narrations for them. In our home mommy being at the computer has the same effect on the children as me being on the telephone. Chaos seems to ensue amongst the little ones.

Thanks for any input. Have to get back to the littles!

No, haven't seen it but one piece of caution about computer microphones in general; they pick up everything! If you have more than one person talking in the general area the mic will try to put all the words into text.

At least that has been my experience with them. It was a few years ago so maybe the manufacturers have been able to overcome that particular problem.

Hello Michelle,
My husband used Dragon Naturallyspeaking for his thesis a few years ago and I remember to set it up (at that time) he had to read aloud for hours to it from a variety of books, not only course work but fiction books and newspapers as well. I think the goal was to build the vocabulary but it all had to be done in strictest silence.
On the plus side, he got to read a lot of the bedtime stories that year.

I was wondering about background noise interferring. Actually, that's one of my frustrations while typing narrations for my children, I have a hard time hearing them with all the background noise and interuptions.
Dh thinks it's a great idea though so we may try it anyway. If we do I'll let everyone know how it works! Thanks for sharing your experiances!

I did some research last year when I was seriously thinking about buying Naturally Speaking. One of the things that helped me decide against it was a website that I found. People shared their experiences with dictation software. I could not stop laughing at the hysterical mistakes the software made. The more I thought about it, I realized that if it would make so many errors with adults, who are likely to be enunciating clearly, it may end up being fairly useless with my children. I was concerned about the issue of background noise also since the computer I'd want to use it on is in the midst of our kitchen/family room area.

If you do end up buying it, please report back to us on how it works out. I'd love to find out that it would be worthwhile. We'd certainly have a lot more oral narrations on paper if that were the case . . . .
