Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We just finished the Little House series and came across another book entitled "In the Land of the Big Red Apple" by Roger Lea MacBride. Apparently, there are two other books in this series which are "before" this one and are about Rose's life (Laura's daughter). Has anybody read these? Are they as good as Little House series about Laura's childhood?

How about "The Days of Laura Ingalls Wilder" series? I have "Book 1" -- Missouri Homestead by T L Tedrow.

Any info you can share on these two series would be appreciated as we thoroughly enjoyed the LH series, but I am afraid to begin these other ones and spoil the fond feelings we have from LH. (I understand that the First Four Years was not "finished" the way the others were in the series and, consequently, not has good; so we opted not to read it.)

Thanks in advance!

I will be watching this thread. We are reading the LH series for the third time Each time we end dd#1 wants to start again. This time she says she wants to read one of the other series so I would like to hear some critiques as well.

Glin--yes the First Four Years is not that great of a book and we choose not to include it. I have read it myself along with the diary that Laura keeps when she and Almanzo and Rose move to Mansfield and also a book of letters that Laura writes to Almanzo while visiting Rose in San Francisco.

We have a lot of big LIW fans and afficianados here, so there are some older discussions on the series as well as the prequel series and sequel series. I think most here have voiced that they much prefer the prequels written by Lissa Wiley over the sequels about Rose written by McBride.

Interesting past threads with opinions and background on the series.
Little House - Prequels
Rose Wilder Lane

Laura Ingalls Tedrow Books

This is a nice listing of each series by author on Lissa Wiley's blog.

The last Rose book involves her leaving home to be a telegraph operator in San Francisco. She falls in with a crowd of people who seem to spend all their spare time dancing and drinking. (To Rose's credit, she doesn't do much of the latter, but...) I would not want my 11yo daughter to read that book right now.
