I just started homeschooling last year. After reading everything i could find about homeschooling and methods used i feel very drawn toward Charlotte Mason and Maria Montessori. I've read Elizabeth's book as well.

My question is this. How do I start using narration with my teenager. Should i have him dictate or should i just start by having him write his own narration. He is not a very good "writer". He is a fairly good story teller. Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

Narration can be tricky especially with a 13 year old. Mostly I just ask my boys to tell me about what they just read. I may ask a question to draw them out a bit. Once a week or so I will ask them to write about what they found most interesting from last week's studies. It usually is something from history or science. These are seldom more than two paragraphs long. We also do something we call Ocular Athletics (from G.K. Chesterton's Tremendous Trifles where he challenges everyone to be an ocular athlete) and they discribe some everyday object or activity. These are very popular. I haven't started this yet but I think they will like to write journal entries for Robinson Crusoe which we will be reading aloud soon. My boys are not amazing writers but they do these without much moaning and carrying on and in the case of Ocular Athletics they will remind me!
