Hello All,

I don't know if this is the place to start this thread so please feel free to move dearest moderators

My 9 year old 4th grader is excellent at oral narration. Whether we read aloud or she reads to herself, she "gets" narration so I want to start transitioning into having her write her own narrations, very slowly. How have others done this? She is extremely verbal but does not like to write in the least. She does beautiful copywork and copies very well but has a very hard time spelling and writing her own thoughts. We are working on the spelling with AAS (which she loves) but she still gets very frustrated that her spelling is so bad. I have her write birthday cards and menus and all sorts of other written work but I want to slowly start her writing actual paragraphs and such.

My thought is to have her dictate, I'll write down and then she can copy for a while??? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think that it is the next logical step. I still do that with my fifth grader when she has to write something a bit lengthy. To speed up the process I sit at the keyboard and type while she dictates, then she can copy.

Thanks Ladies! I was thinking that I could do a small passage like an Aesop's fable (someone at the park suggested it!) and then she could dictate and then copy what I typed out.

I'll try it next week!

I agree about taking written dictations and offering those typed up for copywork. My 4th grader still can't write too much in one sitting without feeling overwhelmed, and he's really working on polishing up his cursive so I take a portion of his narration and enter into this handwriting worksheet maker I found online for free. I love it!!!! I can choose the cursive font, the line patterning and write out several lines for him to use as copywork. Just wanted to mention it since I've found it to be a great resource.

Oh, one more thing I meant to post in that first post, but forgot, sometimes I just have him type out his narration rather than write it. It helps with his keyboarding skills. I make the font nice and big for him. I have my word processor instantly notify a mis-spelled word with a red line underneath and that has actually helped him with his spelling. I ask him to ignore those until he finishes his narration and then go back and try to correct the spelling on his own. Sometimes, I use those words as his spelling words.

Like your idea of using Aesop's fables, I try to choose something short for written narrations.
