Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have read through all the old threads and I am still confused.

~If I were going to purchase IEW for my 6th and 4th grade daughters, what would I purchase, Writing With Structure and Style or Student Writing Intensive?

~Would I need a separate grammar program?

Jenny,

I'm still working on my coffee so hope to make some sense this morning. Usually it is recommended that you buy both. The Writing with Structure and Style is for the parent to watch and the Student Writing Intensive is for the children to watch. Now you might be able to get away with just one or the other. They do sell the two together at a bundle rate.

My computer battery is about to go and I have to get our day going. I will be back later with some more thoughts for you.

Jenny, it depends on what you r goal is. Ideally you should watch the TWSS videos, bc in them Pudewa explains each unit and takes you through some exercises to learn the methods he uses.

If that isnt an option then you can buy SWI which would be Pudewa teaching directly to your children on video. But know that it is NOT necessary to have this.

Some options might be:
buy TWSS, view it with your children or without (he is very amusing) and use sources you have around the house to try the various units.

buy TWSS and begin watching it but also buy a Themed Lesson Guide like History or Bible or (my fav) All Things Fun and Fascinating. Teach via the lesson guides while you learn about the methods of IEW.

buy only SWI and allow your children to watch Pudewa teach the lesson. Watch and write with them so you all learn together.

The main drawback I see to the SWI is you have purchased a product which is self limiting- it can be paused of course, but essentially your material is limited to wht is on those tapes/ DVDs. The main drawback to TWSS is cost and lack of lesson plans (easily remedied with a themed unit).

I managed to borrow the TWSS, AND the SWI which was a great boon to my homeschool. Additionally we were very lucky to attend a seminar with Mr Pudewa, which was ridiculous fun! I had no idea how entertained my kids would be. He has such amazing energy.

Now, having watched TWSS and seen him teach my kids in real life, I decided to buy the All Things Fun and Fascinating lessons to use this year. SWI-A still moved too quickly for my younger son who is 9. So far we have written outlines for about 4 pieces and last week we rewrote our first fable from outline. Both my kids are balky about writing (boys). Both re wrote the fable in the most creative ways- they decided to change the animals, the setting, and generally just had a BLAST!

I read elsewhere recently that Pudewa is Catholic, but I have no idea if that is true.:D

Anyway, my best advice would be to buy TWSS and a themed lesson which suits your kids needs. If you buy two themed lessons you can have them write in the book, like a workbook. I bought one to use with both boys and so I copy as needed.

We are doing separate grammar.

We purchased the TWSS and the SWI. The TWSS is primarily for the parent but it can be used alone. A friend of mine does it that way. The SWI is for the kids to watch as it leads them through the units. It's kind of like hand holding them and me through it and comes with "lesson plans". We are loving it! I am planning on going through the SWI and then moving on to a themed lesson guide. I'm not doing separate grammar with them this year because we had been doing it up until this year. I wanted to just focus on the writing this year and will probably add grammar back in next year.

There is an email loop called IEW Families and another one that is for buying/selling used IEW products - I can't remember the name of that one but it's a sister list to the other one; you have to join the main one first to get to the other (but you can be no-mail, b/c it's a very high volume list)

Anyway, just to let you know - the used sets go very quickly - difficult if you're buying but good to know if you decide to buy new, b/c you can resell very easily. I bought the TWSS and SWI-B for oldest ds when he was 12, then recently ended up swapping the SWI-B to someone who has the SWI-A, for my younger kids to start IEW earlier. And I bought SICC for my oldest to continue on.
