Is there a preferred method of teaching reading or writing first? Or at the same time?

I honestly cannot remember how I learned this.

It really depends on the child.

My oldest was behind in her fine motor skills but she was very interested in learning to read. So I taught her to read and once her fine motor skills were at the proper level we started working on handwriting and spelling. (I used the Kindergarten readiness checklists for fine motor skills)   

With my other children reading and writing have been taught at the same time as part of the same process.

Part of learning the alphabet was learning to write the letters; part of learning a new word is writing it out.
