Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just wondering - my boys have been doing Easy Grammar - do I have to teach them how to diagram?

you don't HAVE to do nothin' you don't wanna.

my opinion on diagramming is:
some kids need it, but I personally think most can do without it just fine.

does he know the parts of speech and how they relate without it?

if so, he doesn't need diagramming, imnsh-but-not-an-english-major-opinion.

I guess I just loved diagramming so much so I could visually break down a sentence that I see it as fun and useful.

I seem to remember some threads talking about some fun to learn resources for diagramming.

I'm with Jen.

I wish my son's school would teach diagramming once with an annual refresher rather than teaching each of the parts of speech individually every year.    We were just talking about this yesterday, as a matter of fact.

I love diagramming, but that's probably because it's easy for me, like Jenn.

I'm not anti-diagramming.

I just don't think it's an absolute kind of thing.

But then again, I think the whole, let's spend 12 years making sure kids hate to read or write anything by drilling them with predictate nominatives every. day. every. year. is nuts. I HATED that and I was good at it. If they MUST do it every year, why can't they at least just do it the first quarter and then incorpoorate it into editing of writings the rest of the year?

I don't mind diagramming. My dd learned to diagram early and is fine with it. For my guys I decided to do Easy Grammar - with EG you don't diagram but identify prepositional phrases and other parts of the sentence after this.

Now I am wondering if I just keep up with EG or move to more traditional diagramming. Or I could just wait to Grade 7 and 8 and do Analytical Grammar which does what you say Martha - you only do for 12 weeks then do a refresher after that.

I loved diagramming.

I can say, that when I got into College, and decided to take Latin as my language, I was one of the few people who understood how and what words were doing in any given sentence. That made learning Latin - and what forms of the words to use - SO much easier - and I loved Latin, took it all four years of my undergrad. (And I had not taken any other foreign language, I didn't take one in high school.) I always felt it was my Catholic Elementary English Teacher - I had her from grades 5th to 8th - and she VERY MUCH STRESSED diagramming.

So, while I don't think it needs to be done until like 5th grade or so, I do think it can be quite useful.

OK - so what do you recommend for diagramming/grammar for Grade 5? My dd has done Rod and Staff, Seton and Voyages - and I am not impressed with any of them - my guys would find them so boring.

I was just searching because I knew I remembered you asking this before...and you found it. Apparently, this is an unresolved question?
