We always do a read-aloud at Lunch -- helps me as I eat les an helps the kids as they're a "captive audience".

This week we started reading Frances Frost's children's version of Menotti's opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors". Written in 1952, this is a "narrative adaptation preserving the exact dialogue of the opera". Well, guys you need to hunt for this one -- we got ours at a library sale (why do they get rid of all these good ones

) -- on ABEBooks there are lots of copies -- here's a link to one Amahl and the Night Visitors -- my kids from Cate on down are so enjoying this one. King Kaspar is hilarious and Amahl's character, a cripple, is not maudlin or melodramatic; it really is a great read-aloud.

We have this one in the book basket...at least I think we do...I actually don't see that it the Frances Frost version. It just says by Gian Carlo Menotti and illustrated by Michele Lemieux.....hmmmmm....I wonder if this is a good version. I know nothing about this opera or book.

I found out doing a search on "Gian-Carlo Menotti" that he did this opera for NBC back in 1951 -- check your library and see if they've got in on video. It's considered a Christmas classic -- right up there with "A Christmas Carol".

we sure did enjoy it.
