Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been incorporating a few things from www.letteroftheweek.com with my pre-schooler. Does anyone else use this resource? I'm wondering about the purpose of the "theme word flash cards". If you haven't seen this site, the author suggests writing 4-5 words (all beginning with the letter of the week) on index cards, one word per card and using them as flash cards (sort of) for the preschooler. I'm just wondering about the purpose of this. Can we really expect the child to recognize the words? I guess I'm sort of "old school" when it comes to teaching my kids to read. I really like the letter of the week approach, I just don't get the reason behind these flash cards. Can anyone clue me in?

It seems to me to be teaching "whole language" getting the kid to memorize the look of certain words rather than being able to sound them out phonetically. I prefer putting pictures of things that begin with the letter instead, to give them a little hint of what the letter is (put the pics on one side and the letter on the other and they are an instant "quiz' for them)

Thanks Karen. That is what I have done as it is something I am more familiar with. I think the letter of the week idea is a nice, gentle intro for ds who is only 4.
