Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am wondering how formal everyone goes with their Language Arts programs?? For example, do you use the _Language of God_ workbooks by CHC, or _Primary and/or Intermediate Language Lessons_ by Emma Serl? _English For the Thoughtful Child_? _Simply Grammar_ by Karen Andreola?

If you don't use a specific text, how do you approach Language Arts with a variety of ages. I'm not really talking about copywork, spelling, and dictation, but more the dynamics of Language Arts. Hope this makes sense. TIA for all responses.

Hello Meredith,

I find it useful to have reference books around for me wrt language arts - and then, as the dc grow older, they use the reference books, too.

We have Childcraft Word Power, The Elements of Style by Strunk and White, Writer's Inc, The Primary Spelling and Grammar Handbook, the How To Write series by Pie Corbett - and probably more.

I guess our language arts stem from real life writing, making books and lapbooks, journaling. We use the reference books where it seems helpful and according to age/stage.

I know the language arts sections in the FIAR volumes is excellent.

Many people here also seem to like Bravewriter and The Writer's Jungle by Julie Bogart.

HTH!

The boys (9 1/2 and almost 11) and I are working through Simply Grammar, doing the exercises orally. They also work on Mad Libs on their own from time to time for practice. We use FIAR, so we go through all of the language arts suggestions for each unit. When we're working on our own unit, we just narrate and try to incorporate Elizabeth's language arts lapbook suggestions (SEE Rabbit Trails forum) (like Venn Diagrams, making circle story wheels, etc). Though mine are close in age, I think that the FIAR suggestions and the lapbook ideas would be easy to use for with a large age span.

We're ordering The Writer's Jungle to use with the boys (and myself) too.

Thanks so much for your replies ladies, we're already doing much of this, I am just always curious to know what works for others as well. It sounds like we're on the right track.

Thanks again.
