Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Oh, such a newbie here! One month of homeschooling under our belts -- whoo hoo! And I just noticed in Laura Berquist's book 'Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum' that after my 5th grader reads some books on a history topic to have him write a report. Well, I am the kind of person who thrives on guidance and I need a little more than that -- what is appropriate/reasonable to ask of my 5th grader as far as report writing and how should I assess his work? (This should be interesting -- he's a good reader, but hates to write.) Your wisdom appreciated.

Just bumping this up for MB. I don't have a good answer, still struggle with the writing thing here, but I know there are plenty of ladies who can give good advice on this!

In the 5th grade syllabus, LB gives these suggestions:

  • Give your student the title of the essay and let him think about what he wants to say about it.
  • If he has mentioned anyone/anything in particular while reading the book, remind him of those things.
  • Let him look back over the book, if he wants to.
  • Have him tell you what he wants you to say while you write or type with correct capitalization and punctuation.
  • The following day, have him copy his composition.

She also mentions that you should have this report modelled on the writing he is doing in Intermediate Language Lessons if you are using that. In 5th grade the emphasis is on paragraphing. The student should be using good descriptive words, maintaining the same person (not switching from first to third person), composing grammatically correct sentences, using a consistent tense (not switching from past to present tense). This is a paraphrase of the writing rubrics which is in the syllabus also.

Other ladies here can tell you from their personal perspective, but I thought this general guideline might be helpful.

Tomorrow my oldest (in 4th) are writing their first saint report. The guidelines for content are these:

  • name of saint
  • time period in which he or she lived
  • geographical area in which he or she lived
  • work he or she is most known for
  • anecdote about his or her life

I hope that helps!
