We are currently reading and listening to both the Betsy-Tacy series and the Anne of Green Gables series. Both series feature strong female heroines who love to write. I think my daughters are "catching" a bit of the desire to write from these books. Both our Betsy book and our Anne book have recently included chapters highlighting humorous and melodramatic stories written by the main characters. For your entertainment, I will copy below a completely unsolicited story written by my 11 yo earlier today after returning from a trip to the dentist. She had her sisters and me laughing hysterically at this. (I worked with her a bit on grammar such as comma placement and paragraph breaks, but the rest is as she originally wrote it.)
A DENTAL TRAGEDY
I must now tell you a tragic tale. Once upon a time there was a girl named Lillian. She lay in her bed, dreading the days’ events. The thing that Lillian was dreading was the dentist.
“Get up, Lillian, or we’ll be late for the dentist,” said her mother. “Do I have to?” Lillian groaned. “Oh yes of course!” her mother cried. Lillian, as slowly as possible, got dressed, and reluctantly dragged herself downstairs. She ate breakfast as slowly as possible, hoping that something would stop them from going. Unfortunately, nothing did.
Lillian’s dentist truly was horrible. The place, the dentist, the toothpaste, the fluoride treatment, the everything was horrible. When they reached the building, they walked in. Trembling, Lillian sat down, waiting for the fatal moment when her name was called. Not five seconds after she sat down, she heard the dentist say, “Lillian.” The words pierced her like a gun shot directly at her heart. She did not know what to do. Should she go, and face a tragic and maybe even deadly appointment? Or should she sit stock still in her seat? She would so much rather stay, but something told her she had to go.
She slowly stood up, and followed the dentist. She was so wobbly, that it looked like she would fall over. She sat down in her seat. Then the dentist shouted at her, “How many times a day do you brush your teeth??!” “T…t...twice a day,” she stammered. “WHAT!!” he screamed. “You have to brush your teeth at least 24 times a day! One brushing an hour! I am not asking much at all! Now open your mouth!!” Quickly, Lillian did so. “Now as a punishment for you only brushing your teeth twice a day, I present to you spinach flavored tooth paste!! Ha, Ha!!” he shrieked madly. She tried to spit it out, but every time she did he roared, “STOP!!”
When he was done, he ordered, “Swish this purple stuff in your mouth for five minutes!!” “Five!!” said Lillian in a shocked voice. “Of course five!!” said the hated one. Lillian did it, and an awful taste spread over her mouth. Then quickly, and completely on accident, she swallowed it and then died.
The End

Oh, Irene,
She has perfectly captured a child's view of the dentist! That is fantastic!
We LOVE Betsy-Tacy and Anne of Green Gables around here, too!

Hi Gwen,
Are you referring to the book series when you mention an Unfortunate Event? We've never read them, but I have heard that the author has an unusual sense of humor.

yes....We don' read them as a family but our two teens have read the whole series. Check one out first to see if you like it; there seems to be 2 definite camps of like and dislike. The kids have read many excerpts to me as well as narrated and the Beaudelaire orphans are constantly experiencing the type of horrors (and worse)your dd wrote about. I just want to mention again that your dd's piece was very entertaining. I hope she writes more!

Thanks for the extra info on the Unfortunate Events books. It's funny, I had read a conversation on this board about them and thought we wouldn't like them, so never looked into them. But now I am reminded of the conversation about the BBC Narnia movies and how whether a family enjoys them is such a matter of varying taste. Maybe I should do as you suggest and read one of the books myself.
And thanks for your words of encouragement to dd. I have relayed to her the responses here, and I think she's been encouraged in her writing. (Not one of her favorite subjects!)
