Our little Rachel is not speaking yet (her cleft palate surgery is soon ) and we're seriously thinking of teaching her to sign to help with communication. I know our other children would benefit as well.
There are so many Signing Time Videos available. Which ones should I get?

It sounds like you are already convinced, but they really are very beneficial for early communication. Even children with no development challenges have things to express before their vocal skills are developed enough to speak. We found the Signing Time videos proved to be very helpful in helping our triplets express their needs and wants early on, without whining and the guessing games. They are 5 now, but we all find signing helpful sometimes, and it is also another valid second (or 3rd or 4th)language. Just anted to share there. I hope you find your family and Rachel's experience valuable and helpful.
Family, Feelings and Funis a good one, because it is always important to express feelings. Also,Every Day Signs covers words little ones would use most days. But honestly....I love them all, and there are beneficial words in all of the videos, for more communication. We also have: ABC Signs, My Favorite Things, Playtime Signs, and My First Signs. So if you have any specific questions with any of them, I can always pop one in and see what I can tell you.
My oldest daughter and I just started an adult ASL course, so we are learning at a rapid pace but it is fun, and I know it'll be rewarding.

Thanks, Laura. I was thinking of getting Baby Signs and then Amazon sells Vol 1-6 in sets. Does that sound good or is Baby Signs too easy? It sounds like Every Day Signs would be best though.

I don't know about Baby Signs. But my trio were watching the Signing Time videos (only 1 video at a time) when they were still in bouncy seats....so 6+ months?? They were signing well before 1 year old, so I would think that they would work well for Rachel, since she is 1 now.

Lisa~
We've checked out lots of the DVDs from the library and own the Gift Set, Vol. 4-6 and Gift Set 10-13.
My dc haven't really started watching them until 18-24 months, so I don't know if younger babes would be attracted to the baby signing times more. ??? The songs are definitley NOT as fun on the baby ones!
I like the gift sets, as the CD is included, which really helps to reinforce the signs and helps the kids become fluent.
Gift Set 4-6 is the favorite and the one I tell everyone to buy if you want to own and have a limited budget. CD #4 (Feelings, Family and Fun) and CD #6 (My Favorite Things) are the absolute favs.
But, since you're using it for "baby/toddler communication" maybe vols 1-3 would be most helpful at this point. I'm not much help, am I?
Does your library have any to preview?

Thanks Suzanne and Laura. I think I'll look into getting the sets. Unfortunately, our library doesn't have any of these videos to preview.
Rachel is actually 20 months old but developmentally younger. She was VERY babied by her foster family in China. So much better to be babied and loved very much than neglected. Her bonding and attachment have been incredibly easy I'm sure because of this.
Maybe the baby signs (she loves songs) would be good to get started.
Thanks for the help!

Lisa, have you checked to see if Signing Time is carried by your local PBS station? We have had the very good fortune to see all episodes on TV. Here is the where you can check if your area carries it.
Under the "Track your progress" section on the right side of this page you can see the signs taught per episode. Perhaps that will help?
My youngest child is 18 months and he has been watching Signing Time for the past 9 months and loves it. I can't speak to Baby Signing Time, but my son has been perfectly happy watching the regular one.
I hope this helps!

The company who makes the Signing Time just had a sale on Ebay - 99 cents for the DVD set of 1-3 including a CD with all the music from the first three. They updated the first three videos (just the mother's "look" not the children or the information) to correspond with the later videos (4-13).
I bought 3 sets of them - one for my son, one for a friend's child and one for my nephew. They are great!
We previously picked them up at the library, but this way, we can watch them whenever we want.
They may have reposted any they didn't sell. The company is "Two Small Hands".

That's what we did, taped some shows. Our library doesn't carry the whole series, and the cost was overwhelming.
I was thinking of the Baby signs, too. Would love to hear feedback.

Baby Signs are great. We have both volumes (though volume one has gone missing). Volume 2 has been getting a lot of play with our 17 month old. He stands, dances, signs and sits transfixed depending on his energy level. I heartily recommend them. I actually bought them over a year ago for my then 2 year old and she loved them, too (still does). We own most of the series but the most popular are ABC Signs, Happy Birthday, Family, Feelings, Fun...
We also DVR the series on PBS--it comes on here in the DFW area most Sunday mornings at 6:30 am....
We love, love Signing Time!

My almost 16 mo dd loves, I mean *loves* Signing time. We have the set and if she isn't watching the dvd (only once a day), then she wants to listen to the cd (guess what songs are going through my head all the time! ) She has done better on catching onto the signs on the My First Signs, Everyday Signs, and Playtime Signs which are the first 3. We have never done the Baby signs because all my other children watch them too. So maybe start out with those and then add to your collection when you are ready.
