Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone seen this PBS series -- here's the web-site Between the Lions where you can get more info.

My 5 yod is just beginning to blend words and start reading and these are really kind of cute. (The down side is they do have Dr. Ruth, but she's pretty inocuous...) The stories they read are interesting and the songs and skits really seem to help teach the concepts. I like that they show both how a short vowel sound "works" in a word, but then add another vowel to show how that can change the word -- ie, not to note.

I love this show. I was weary of Dr Ruth at the beginning too, but the kids don't know who she is. Boy will they be in for a surprise when they grow up! (hopefully they will never have to know)

Dd wasn't much interested in the show for a long time. Now that she is beginning to read better she really seems to enjoy it.

The show is on at a time we are usually not home so we don't see it. I have just finished reading Between the Lions Book for Parents which is very helpful in ideas, activities and advice for instructing early readers.

Thought I would share.

For what it's worth, I have never let my children watch this show. I think it's horrible. Many times I've previewed it for a few minutes and every time something was unacceptable to me. Once it made me gasp! I can't remember exactly what each thing was, but I just wanted to warn you. I was speaking with a friend the other day and we were talking about PBS and she mentioned how she thought this show was very bad. Sorry I can't be more precise.

Robin -- if you remember any of the objectionable stuff, please let me know as I haven't seen anything yet    but then I did grow up in SF in the late 60s 70s !

Seriously, I'd be interested in things you saw....

Blessings!

I saw an episode once with a major grammatical error, and that bugged me so much I never watched it again (kids were much younger).

I saw this post a few days ago and TIVO'd Between The Lions for my 5 year old. All it took was once. Everytime we watch PBS, there is SOMETHING..

Between The Lions - a Crystal ball
Clifford - Cleo tried to use Feng Shui in Clifford's dog house to cure his hiccups.
Dora - magic, witch, there was more.. I don't remember exactly.
Caillou-whining.. all of the annoying whining!
Sesame Street - The song that went "Mommy lives in this tree, my daddy lives in another tree but they both love me"
Dragon Tales - dragons.. need I say more.
Zoboomafoo - dog "mess" referred to as "poop" with a giggle by one of the Kratt brothers. (As if my boys need an example to giggle about "poop!" .. no, thank you.)

Seeing a crystal ball and feng shui gave me a teachable moment, though. I was able to show the children in the CCC where it says we should have nothing to do with magic, divination, etc.. and remind them that we can pray to God and ask for the intercession to cure hiccups or anything else for that matter.

Blessings,

I don't see anything wrong with Seasame Street singing about divorced Moms and Dads loving their kiddies. They do! Kids need to be reminded of that fact b/c most often than not they believe the divorce to be their fault.
When I taught elementary school these precious children were carrying such hurt regarding divorce and feeling ashamed, unloved and angry.

I would let my ds watch that episode and whip out the CCC to talk about marriage as a sacrament and how we need to pray for children whose Moms and Dads no longer are married.

Marriage is under such an attack that we should teach our children to pray for marriages and all families daily.

We watch Clifford, DragonTales and Zoboomafoo.

Can't stand Caillou for the whiny whiny whiny talk!!!

I guess it is the preferences of the individual families.

I still did really enjoy the Between the Lions book I just finished. I copied a handwriting page out of there today. Great explanations on how to form lowercase letters!

Marybeth,
I could not agree with you more. Children of divorced parents should be reassured of the love of their parents.

My issue is that I did not want Sesame Street to teach my naive children that divorce exists. That is our job. When, the topic affected our family because of the situation of some acquaintances of ours, only then was it necessary to explain about divorce. We were able to very gently explain it to them. Our older boys hearts were moved and they prayed for the family that was suffering every evening during family prayer time.

On this topic of divorce, our still-married-to-each-other-neighbors' daughter was made to feel like the odd girl at her lunch table at school because she ONLY has ONE house and ONLY two parents. What a sad testimony to the times we live in.

Blessings,

Hooray MacBeth!

I think that the grammatical errors are bad enough to justify not watching it. If it weren't a show about language, maybe I wouldn't mind so much.

Although my kids did learn some things from it, Between the Lions got cut from our TV line-up. Also, why introduce Dr. Ruth at all? What is the agenda? In the end this was the last of my PBS shows to go. Every one seemed ADD inducing or bad behavior modeling. I finally just cut the cable. We read even more now.
