Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi There,

I had bought the book Harp & Laurel Wreath and sold it and just bought another copy hoping I could use it for dictation/copywork for the kids. But the most I did with it was read from it a few times.

Now, I'm contemplating getting Spelling Wisdom but remembered that I also have Harp & Laurel Wreath. Has anyone ever used both that could compare them?

Last year the few times I did dictation for my 12yod and 10yo twin sons was to pick a passage and dictate it to all 3 kids, then stop the boys at a certain point and continue the passage with my daughter. But I started running out of passage ideas.

Hearing people rave about Spelling Wisdom caused me to look at their Book 2 once again. Then I thought, maybe I could do something similar with the H&LW?

This area (dictation/copywork) has been a weak area in our home. I'd love some ideas and time saving ideas in this area. THanks so much!!!

Ana

I have done dictation and copywork with my children for a number of years now. For our family it has paid off, for some I know they feel it doesn't.

I am unfamiliar with Spelling Wisdom so I can't comment there. I do have H&LW and am currently using it for copywork. For dication we use various favourites, one dd for example is using a Redwall book, "Rackety Tam' for dictation. I am very happy with H&LW, over the years for copywork and dictation we have used poetry, Bible verses/passages, and favourite literature.

Time saving mmmm, well two sons for example have a dictation passage, their spelling words are the words they misspell from dictation and they are tested at the end of the week.

Ideas- One son likes a copywork jar, at one stage his copywork consisted of poetry from LOTR which he would pull out at random from the jar.

We are using Spelling Wisdom 2. We began it last year, and will continue it this coming year with our 13yod.

I think it's been very effective, as the lessons are more planned out in terms of reviewing words, etc. I LOVE the passages she's picked out to use, and they've often spawned much discussion.

BUT, I also love H&LW, and have it, and will use that as well when we need a break or two from SW. What I mean is, most often we'll use SW on a more daily basis. But there are still times I like to choose (or my daughter does) certain poems, pieces of literature, quotes, etc. for copywork too.

So we'll use SW for probably 4 days per week, and choose our own 1 day per week (or thereabouts) as a bit of a change up. She likes change up once in awhile, but also likes the security of something that she knows what's coming.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I wanted to be sure to share since we do use SW, and really like it a lot! I just feel it gives us the continuity we need, but still allows us to have the effectiveness of copywork that we really need.

God bless!

I'm planning to pull out H&LW this year, after not using it last year. It's such a good resource, and I really don't know why I haven't used it more, except that it's the kind of book that I put down and then forget where I put it.

I plan to do copywork out of it this year with my 10yo, plus dictation, which we have never done consistently. Overall I've found copywork in itself to be very good for teaching spelling -- at least, the child who has done the most copywork (said 10yo) is my best speller to date.

He'll be doing US history with From Sea to Shining Sea this year, so I think I'm going to have him copy some passages from some of the "historical" poems in the Grammar Stage section to go in his timeline book.

I also want to use the early childhood poems to teach reading -- my current developing reader loathes anything that looks like a "reading lesson," so I thought we'd just work from the shorter poems, putting words with sounds we don't know on the whiteboard and practicing them before moving on to the next one.

I don't know anything about Spelling Wisdom, but I found my H&LW the other day, and it's really been on my mind to find deliberate ways to use it this year, instead of waiting to get around to reading some poetry and then not being able to find the book and giving up, which so far has been my usual MO with that book. Time for a change!

Sally
