Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I haven't done much handwriting with my 6 yo boy so as I plan for next year I came upon someone's opinion that you should teach cursive right away and not bother with printing.

I was taught by Spanish nuns and that is the way we did. I was never taught printing. Funny I had forgotten this fact until now... Anyhow, has anybody here taught only cursive and bypassed the printing? how did it work? how did you go about it? what program did you use?

Thanks,

Natalia,

I teach cursive first. I don't use a program to teach writing, we learn phonograms, everyday we write the phonograms we know. In the beginning, I will write a letter and my dc will copy it. After they know how to write a few phonograms, then, they can start copy work by copying words, eventually we get up to copying sentences and paragraphs. My dc write very well. I have taught the last three this way.

But, if you want a program, there is a program called cursive first out there.

God Bless
Robynn

Natalia, I just found your post interesting. Our Spanish nuns taught us print first, then switched to cursive at 3rd grade. I'm wondering if it's an "order" thing. Our nuns were Hijas de Jesus/Daughters of Jesus.

Interesting Stef.

I always thought that the teaching of cursive was more of an European thing. My nieces attend a French school in the Dominican Republic (go figure )and they were taught cursive. So I thought that maybe that is the way it was done in Europe. But my education was very Montessori-an so maybe it is the Montessori way I wonder?

Robynn,
What was your rational to teach cursive and not printing? Just curious...

Doing some googling I found a post by a teacher in an American school in the Middle East and she was saying how they use a method very similar to yours, Robynn. There is not a standardized way of teaching, the kids are not taught strokes the way it is done here. As a result the kids all develop an very individualized handwriting. I thought it was interesting. Read the post here
