I am getting all worked up about what my dd should do for Grade 7 grammar. I like doing "living grammar" and find a lot of grammar texts tedious - but I need to figure out what is necessary coming up to high school. I like Ruth Heller's books - but they are not sufficient on their own. My choices as I see it are:

- Voyages in English
- Rod and Staff
- Easy Grammar Plus
- Analytical Grammar
- new Seton English 7

I have Lingua Mater - is this sufficient or do I need to do something else with it.

Is grammar like Math - just have to do it? Is diagramming necessary.

Any advice would be so appreciated.

Hi! I'm new here (gave my intro a couple of days ago), but I wanted to tell you that I have used the Winston Grammar Basic and Advanced programs. My oldest 2 that graduated used these programs and did very well in English all through highschool. Even though they were both homeschooled they graduated with our province's "official" highschool diplomas.

It is very hands on - uses cards and is almost like a game. There is work in a workbook as well, but if they're having troubles understanding some concept, they can just use the cards.

As well, there is a site on the internet called "Grammar Girl". There are podcasts available there for downloading. Friends of ours downloaded these and listen to them in their van. Each "program" is about 3 minutes long (?) and gives a practical grammar application. My family has actually only listened to 1 short "program", but it was very helpful in the children's writing!

Hi Kozimom!

question - can you start Winston Grammar in 7th without any prior years?

Thanks

Yes! It's aimed at that age - gr. 7 - 10? My son that just graduated only used Winston Grammar. The English teacher that he was "under" for highschool didn't actually give anymore grammar. My daughter that graduated 2 years ago, used the Winston Grammar program and then in grade 12, the English teacher had her use some Grammar material from ABEKA. And it was tedious...........

I just called Winston Grammar and spoke at length with a very very helpful lady. It sounds like a good program. She gave me lots of good advice... made me rethink my grammar plan for my 4th Graders too...

Thank you again Kozimom!

Marilyn,
Seconding the Winston Grammar! I used it last year (6th grade) with S. and we're continuing this year with Winston Word Works. The program is a very good one and remediated alot of S.'s huge gaps in grammar knowledge. Little M. tagged along on the lessons last year - he was only in second grade then - and picked up several parts of speech, so we're going to try it next year with him too.

It isn't too time intensive and is laid out in a very straight forward fashion. I plan on using it right alongside LM this year.

So I take it that LM is not enough?
And should look into another resource?

It would depend your child I think, Claudia.

My dd badly needed some serious grammar remediation. Because of the strides she made, and because I want to continue that momentum we had going, and because WG is not super time intensive...we'll be using it alongside LM. If your dd has a solid foundation in grammar, I think you'd find LM enough. Just my opinion though. LM does have some grammar woven in.

Even though my dd is strong on grammar she advised Basic for 7th and 8th and only moving to Advanced in High School.

I talked to her about my twin ds who will be Grade 4 - they cannot remember any grammar - though they have no problems remembering all the baseball teams and players and stats for the last 50 years!! Sometimes when I ask what a verb is I get a blank stare!! I was going to do Rod and Staff with them - she said that she thinks grammar is too abstract for Grade 4 and especially boys - so to do it through living grammar ie back to Charlotte Mason and Ruth Beechick etc

Jen - did you use Basic with S.?

Hmm - so maybe I will be ok with just Lingua Mater and some of the Basic. Abby did a couple of years of intensive grammar - Grades 4 and 5 and so maybe I will be ok

I started using Easy Grammar with my 3rd and 5th graders last year and love it! After trying different programs the other years with very little retention this actually clicked and stuck with them. I bought the daily grams also and the kids actually enjoy the quick review each day (so do I). I don;t know about the 7th grade program; but, I'd guess it will be good also. The method she uses of learning prepositions first is the key to success in my opinion.

Jennifer:

What is Word Works?

One thing I would suggest doing with grammar is to pick a word and write many different sentences with the same word, but using the word in as many different parts of speech as possible. This helps sort out for some children that parts of speech are not particular words, necessarily, but how they are used in a sentence. I noticed that most grammar programs tend to use typical words as verbs and others as nouns, etc.

EX. Katie, throw the ball. Katie used her grandma's throw rug.

I don't think any grammar program used the word throw as anything but a verb and then when my son would see a sentence that used the word differently than a verb, he'd basically lose all ability to distinguish nouns from verbs, it so confused him. I tried to think of words that were used as nouns, verbs and adjectives in different contexts for illustration purposes.

Winston Grammar really did help us, but I also did the other informally whenever I could or as part of introducing a new part of speech.

Hope this helps.

Janet

Just to let you know, I think it would be difficult to do Seton's English if you haven't been doing it with them for a few years. Winston grammar is good as is easy grammar.

Late to this conversation...but I do like Easy Grammar. DD18, however, really enjoyed the Grammar with a Giggle series, and I think it begins with a jr high level book.
