Just wanted to share a challenge I gave my 6,8, and 11 yr olds for the summer. I challenged them to read 900 books to their 1 & 3 yr old bros in 90 days. I'm going to put one of those thermometers up in the wall to see the progress and do something special at the end.

Just a suggestion...why not make it "read to your brothers for 20 minutes a day" rather than counting books? Counting the books make the focus on numbers, rather than on type of book and enjoying it. Just my opinion.

I often have reading challenges for my children, they love the tangible, visual 'charts on walls' too. I haven't thought of a challenge for the olders to read to the younger, I'm going to ponder this

Since they're reading mainly picture books I decided to go by a number of books method rather than minutes. Time can be hard to track too when you are doing it sporadically throughout the day. My boys like competition too and so this is motivating them. They all love to read and do plenty of it on their own. I just wanted to get them more involved with the younger ones as I'd like them to be able to take turns working with them while I do more one on one stuff with the others. They all really enjoy the 1 year old and being older are able to appreciate all his milestones. Thet have been trying to get him to say new wods lately. I think this is great stuff for them to know as boy especially.
My 6 year old mentioned to me this morning that he can tell that the 1 year old likes stories better when he makes his voice interesting. So, now he's really getting into changing his voice when he reads. Super for him!

This sounds like a really fun idea. I wonder if I can get my 6 year old interested in this...to read to the 1 year old in our family.

Just wanted to let you know that it is working great 2 weeks running so far and we're at 214 books already! I'm seeing my 6 and 8 year old improving in their oral reading skills and my 1 & 3 year olds looking at and "reading" books much more too.

Sounds interesting. I would worry about the older ones putting pressure on the little ones to be read to, when they wanted to do something else, just to reach the arbitrary 900 mark. Also, my 3 yo likes to have the same book read over and over, would that count only once, or every time?

Actually that did happen one day...my 8 yr old was chasing the 1 year old around reading to him. Funny; but,I had to discuss this with them. They're learning that there are certain places that work better for reading stories like our front porch which has a hanging swing and is quite peaceful rather than in the middle of a room full of toys. Yes, they can read the same book more than once.

I think this is a great idea that probably is more involved than you initially thought. Like the fact that they are learning other things than just how to read better. What a bonus that you are coming across some great teachable moments! I think after we are done with the summer reading program at our local library, I will issue a challenge like this. Our goal for the SRP is for the older boys to read 2 chapters per day and for the younger girls to be read to from 2 picture books a day. This is easily met here, but they have some extra motivation from all those quality toys they are winning as prizes  ! I find it easier to set a chapter or book goal for a day rather than a time goal. It is very hard for me to keep track of everyone's time. I need something more tangible. I am anxious to hear how the rest of the challenge goes! Good luck!
