For one child, we have loved Little Stories for Little Folks from CHC. For two children, 100 Easy Lessons worked wonderfully. All of my readers have completed an appropriate option of The Writing Road to Reading, and with all of them we have played various games and activities from Happy Phonics. :)

I used Learning Language Arts Through Literature. It was very hands-on. From there we went on to either Modern Curriculum Press's plaid series or the Writing Road to Reading.

I know it's a little pricy (the deluxe set) but all my DC have loved HOP. You can now buy the levels individually which makes it affordable!
This year I plan on using a combo of HOP and Montessori's Pink/Blue/Green Series I got from myMontessori For Everyone CD-ROM Complete Collection.Again, I know it's a bit pricy but you without a doubt get your money's worth! It's PACKED with GREAT info on just about EVERYTHING!

i have a haunch that MOST phonics programs are good, IF you stick with it consistently!
we've been pleased with the book PhonicsPathways - it's simple in that it's just a single volume, it's very comprehensive and thorough, and has a few little games to play the kids liked. Of course, we supplemented with some Montessori ideas and tons of reading and so on.

Well I think that maybe the phonics I have been using for my dd is not very visually enticing. She likes little stories for little folks because they are pink. Since I am going to be doing something different for next year, I thought I would ask. I think I am going to do some of the montessori also just because she likes looking at pictures.

I just found this for my son who struggles terribly with writing and thought I would give it a try. It's based on the Orton Gillingham research. It's called All About Spelling
Editing to say that even though it's "all about spelling", it's based on phonics. It doesn't go into reading actually, but I would use it to learn the phonograms and then expand into the different readers available, or just go into simple books like "Hop on Pop". I hope this is making sense. I didn't get much sleep last night and the coffee's not quite kicking in!

We loved Phonics Pathways! It is easy to use, inexpensive and all in one book.

I think that you are right on with that statement. I also think that some kids might need something more visual or less visual which is why some phonics programs seem to work really well for certain kids and not so well with others. But overall, I think a good phonics program will work for most everyone.
For phonics workbooks we have used Explode the Code and Christian Liberty Press. The Christian Liberty Press is very cheap and quite extensive in its coverage.
For programs I use Teach your child in 100 lessons, Ordinary Parents Guide to REading, CHC little Folks readers (which personally I DO NOT think is a stand alone program) and Bob books. Then we they are reading well enough we through in the Faith and Freedom Readers from Seton and the Sonlight Reading list.
For spelling in 1st grade I do Sound Beginnings and probably 2nd too.
I like each program but not exclusively. I tend to go through a certain point and then when I see fatique, stop and go to a different program a bit behind where we were. Since each program emphasizes different sight words and minimizes or emphasizes different phonics patterns I think it works really well. Of course, I have a very hearing impaired child, so I have to a little more extensive on teh phonics than most families will need.

I use a program called Teach Your Childen to Read Well. It is similar to the 100 Easy Lessons book in its format, but it also includes a reader and a comprehension workbook to aid in learning. They do have a web page, but I don't know how to include the link. If you google the program, you should be able to find it.
This is a reading program that goes through 8 grade level, I believe. As the children get older, I also use this book as the foundation of my spelling program, so it in essence becomes my language arts program...although it has no grammar component unfortunately.
Good luck.

The Reading Lesson.
And now I am about to teach my 4th child to read - I have discovered Ruth Beechick's 3Rs and I really really like it.

I've liked Explode The Code combined with LSFLF. It's hard to tell with DS though, he just isn't into formal learning still, and he will be 7 in a couple of weeks.
I do agree, consistency is a major factor in the success of any program.
