Hi all,
We are currently enrolled with Seton. My 7th grade son is using Voyages in English and is finding it rather dry and challenging. Is there a TM for this other than what I might get from Seton? (One the publishers actually wrote.) Also, what are other options for Grammar at this age/stage? Thanks! I am out of touch with the offerings outside of Seton.

See, you all are so bored by grammar that no one will even respond. Please give me some avenues to pursue on this ladies. I don't want to invest in something that will just be a waste of money. What has been tried and true for you all???? Hello, Hello, Hello, is there anybody OUT there???

Hi Kim! When I taught 7th grade Grammar I used Warriner's-- I believe for 7th grade it's his first course. It did have a teacher's edition as well. But it's been 9 years since I've taught - not sure if it's still in print. I'll go hunt a little. It was the grammar program for our whole school (7-12). We've received a lot of positive feedback from collleges about our students' writing abilities.

Oh, I didn't see the other part of your question.
A lot of people seem to say good things about Easy Grammar Plus I think it is used in the Mother of Divine Grace syllabus.
I have heard good things about Warriner's too.
These are the choices recommended at
Ambleside
I use Daily Grammar which is online and free and simple -- not especially rigorous but it seems to stick in my childrens' minds better than VIE did when we were using it.

When we did Seton grammar, we always planned to take 2 years to do the course. VIE is so repetitive from year to year that it really doesn't matter if you skip a whole year. Going more slowly you can liven things up a bit.
I've also used Grammar Plus but it was not as thourough as VIE (I'm thinking it didn't get into punctuation at all, but I might be mixing things up a bit as it has been a long, long time).
I am currently doing Winston Grammar with my 7th grader but he is no where near ready to tackle VIE as at the beginning of this year he was still mixing up nouns and verbs. This is more hands on approach and it is helping him sort some things out. It seems pretty thorough on the grammar side but doesn't get into punctuation at all.
Another option is to take a break and do some diagramming in a simpler text to solidify concepts. We used the Complete Book of Diagrams by Mary Daly.
A lot of it depends on whether or not he is struggling with the grammar/lessons, the print size in the book, the repetiveness and endless exercises, or if it just is dry and he doesn't enjoy it or the pace is too fast.
I found doing one year of Seton Grammar if we did it slowly and well, sufficed for their entire grammar education. With our oldest, we did 6th grade VIE for 6th and 7th grade. She never had another formal grammar course in her life.
If you are with Seton, I do know they use the Warriners grammar in high school and send you an answer key to use. I believe they have a seperate course in 9th. I cannot remember but they told me which course was their toughest. If you haven't done Seton grammar every year, it is best to pick the year that they first introduce the material for that year. The way their courses are arranged, at least when we did grammar with them, was one grade was better explained, the following year was all review so it went way faster with far less explanation. Obviously you want to pick a year that they first introduce and take whatever time you need and then skip the review year.
Anyways, just some thoughts that might save you some money and keep you sane at the same time. We've tried tons of different grammar courses and different things work well depending on the child and the particular difficulty.

We've been using Analytical Grammar all year with my 11th grader and 7th grader. We do it in a group and have actually been *enjoying* grammar! They do all their diagramming on the whiteboard which makes it so much more do-able and much less intimidating. They're a bit competitive and enjoy knowing the answer when the other doesn't. They also enjoy only having to do half the written work - Gabi does 1, Andy does 2, Gabi does 3, etc. We work Monday through Wednesday as a group - everything is done aloud or on the whiteboard. On Thursday they take the test and check each other's answers. They enjoy the fact that Analytical Grammar is "open book" - the important thing is knowing where to find the answer. When we finish each section, the exercise pages are ripped out of the book leaving only the "notes" (teaching). So at the end of the program, the student has a handy Grammar Reference Book which he knows inside and out and feels very comfortable with.
I'm sorry - I sound like an advertisement - but it's really a super program and we have enjoyed grammar tremendously for the first time in years.
