just wondering, do you keep track of all the books that you read to your children, or that they read to themselves?
I want to have good "documentation" for our homeschooling. A big part of our education is there in the piles of library books, audio books, and so on. Is it worth my time to jot down the titles that we've read? I'm already keeping a journal of the Montessori presentations we do... sometimes I think I'm documenting too much.

I document chapter books we've read with a short narration. I just print out a sheet with a small picture of the book's cover and a couple idea starters like, "my favorite part of the book was" and take down the kids' dictation exactly. We put them in page protectors in a binder and it's filling up quite nicely now.
I don't really have a good way to document all the picture books we devour. I recently opened up a Library Thing account and am adding in books that I love (for me) and favorite for the kids- a lot of these end up being our favorite picture books.
Hope that helps. :)

I've just been keeping a "draft" in my email of all books that we read throughout the year. There is a list for dh, me, and chapter books read out loud to the girls. At the end of the year, I print it out and put it in our family binder. Eventually, it'll go somewhere for "school stuff", but we don't have to do that yet.
As each child starts to read their own books, I'll just add their own list, I suppose.
I don't keep track of picture books from the library. There are just too many and I'd drive myself batty .
There was a thread on this from 2005 in the archives that I use for good read aloud suggestions, but it also gives some feedback about keeping lists.
If keeping lists and documenting gives you a sense of satisfaction and something to reference, then do it! If it becomes a burden, then don't. If you're in a state where you are req'd to document and keep records, then at this stage you're getting into a good habit of it. Maybe it won't seem so overwhelming when you HAVE TO.

Our library prints out a "receipt" type paper each time we check out with a list of all the books checked out that visit. Our reviewer last year asked what we read and I couldn't come up with too much--and I know we read more than what I could think of. She suggested I keep these papers and that way would have an easy way of recording what we read. This envelope will be large but it is easy :)

I use A Record of the Learning Lifestyle, and there are sections in the back to record books read to them and books read by them.

I blog them. (the ones that say "curriculum and book list") -- dd-16 does her own list on her blog, so mine is not as updated as hers.

Happy Mama
I do keep a record, it always reassures me that we are achieving more than I think on my 'bad days'.
I jot them down as we go throughout the term, in my case I list on my sidebar of my learning blog and at the end of term I copy and turn into a post. For dd14 who reads an incredible amount I have trained her to 'pile' her books and I try to type up her pile at the end of the week.
Picture books don't always get typed up, I can't decide whether it is as important or not.

Our library also has this system but they have an online catalogue (I can look from home) I discovered that any books I have ever booked out are recorded on my card. Perhaps your library has this feature.

I
blog them.
Before my blogging days I kept a journal. I like looking back at this. Childrens Literature is my passion so I enjoy this. I do not keep track of any twaddle, only the good stuff.

When my DD7 was four, I cut out a bunch of circles in different colors of construction paper. Then I used one circle to make a caterpillar head. (OK, I just put a smiley face on it, but still ...) Every time she read a book, I'd write the name on the circle and glue it to the huge piece of construction paper. By the end of the year, she had a very, long winding caterpillar with names of books on them. Later, I folded it up and put it in her photo album (that serves as a yearbook). She still enjoys taking it out now and then to look at all the books she read that year.
Which reminds me. I should do this for DS5 now ...

I just keep running books lists -- with dates -- in Word docs ... that way I keep all my "unit study" lists complete but in my planner I say what we read too ...

I have a list in my son's "portfolio" sometimes I'll just write the title and author in, other times I'm able to print out a small picture of the cover or cut it out of a catalog - I don't get everything in, but at least it's there. As he begins to truly narrate stories, I'll write those in too.

Mary G also keeps her chapter books on her blog leaving some of us steeped in admiration
I have a print out (I think Leonie linked it) that I ask the girls to write down all they read and or listen to.
