Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have started something fun that my kids are very excited about so I thought I'd share our new Language Arts "Grab Basket" idea.

I'm looking for ways to encourage free writing, narrating, extra copywork, something to add to nature books and memory work so here is what I came up with:

I have typed out various quotes from Saints, lines from nature poetry, passages from current read-alouds, and scripture verses. I cut them into strips and then rolled them like little scrolls and enclosed with yarn or stickers to make them very surprise like and enchanting

A couple times a week they get to pick a new one and add it to whatever medium it applies independent of the other regularly scheduled (or chosen) LA. So far, they love it and are very eager to comply!! Hopefully we'll get a lot of mileage out of it, and it will encourage more creativity and expressions of art as they are also invited to decorate and share with another family member.

Enjoy!

Meredith, this is another inspired idea! My kids would love this. How long did it take you to gather your selections? About how many scrolls to you keep in the basket?

This idea would work well with math problems too!

Alice and Marybeth, thank you for your kind words, although I'm not sure I am able to uphold to *amazing* . It is fun however when a novel idea takes hold for us!

It didn't take too long to gather as I have been musing on this idea for a week or so and just finally put it together. I have been gathering random quotes and materials from most of our read alouds, the bible, nature books we've been perusing and lots of poetry as well. Even little bits and pieces from fairy tales and spiritual reading that I've been doing have some appropriate lines to copy from.

I think there are about 6-8 little scrolls in the basket right now, but keep in mind I only have 2 kiddos schooling besides my preschooler, I'll have to put a few surprises in there for him too so he doesn't feel left out.

I love the math problems idea, that would be great for *bonus* problems on Friday or something.

Well have fun creating your grab baskets and thanks again for your kind words Oh and Marybeth by all means share away
