My first dd (11 - tomorrow) learned to read early and easily. My second dd (7) has been struggling. I decided that over the summer we would buckle down and do some serious phonics. We haven't started yet.
Well she came to me today and told me she had read the first 10 pages of Little House in the Big Woods. Ever so doubtful I asked her to narrate what she had read for me. She did but I was still skeptical (her sister has read the book - she may had heard her talk about it) so I opened the book and asked her to read aloud for me. She DID and quite well I might add. I was blown away!
OK so intensive phonics will not be necessary. It clicked. I've seen this before of course with my boys but it's always such a thrill!
Just had to share.

I just had this experience with ds8. I worried so much and it clicked this spring!!
Its like riding a bike. . .they have to get the feel of it and you can't just make it happen for them.

Ohh so thrilling. I often think when they click with reading it is the most exciting and rewarding part of hsing. Wonderful

I was just coming to this board to look for answers to my question about my son's reading and academic progress. He just turned six. His twin sister reads well, but he still struggles sometimes with basic letter recognition and pronouncing letter sounds. (Not bad enough to qualify for speak therapy--we had him tested for that already.) I wonder if he's just going to be a late bloomer, or if we should work harder. He also has great troubles with memorizing other things like our daily prayers and even the basic sign of the cross.
This summer, (and yesterday was the first day of summer ) I want to focuss with him on his speach, phonics and letters independent from the others. He's definately slower at this stuff than my other children, not just his twin sister. But he's also my "choleric" child who is comptetive and confident about everything he does--even when he's doing it wrong. My son would thrilled to learn reading without my help!

Rose, I had a similar situation with my oldest, who struggled more with learning to read than either of her sisters.
What caused the "click" moment for her was when I went to a local used book store and bought several easy reader books that went way beyond "Dick and Jane" in terms of story. She had always been a little resistant about reading, but one of these books, "More Spaghetti, I Say!" (by Rita Gelman) caught her imagination, and she read it on her own, read it out loud to me, read it out loud to her little sisters, and would read it out loud to anyone who would hold still long enough for her to 'capture' them!
So in a space of a short time my non-reader was clamoring for more books like "More Spaghetti" that she could read to us all.
