Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I hope you ladies (and gentlemen!) have some advice for me. I have three dd's, 5.5, 4.5 and 2.5. My 4.5 dd has really taken off in her reading the past two months-we are speeding through 100 EZ Lessons and she seems to be developing fluency as well, she doesn't need to sound everything out each time. She really enjoys reading and I'm thrilled! I was an early reader as well and it's great to introduce her to books that she can read "all by herself". My 5.5 is having lots of trouble, though. She knows (most days!) her letter sounds but sounding out three letter words just hasn't clicked yet. Some days she says she really wants to learn to read and other days she's not interested. I'm ok with backing off and waiting a few weeks/months-but my question is what to do in the meantime? Do I spend a few minutes a day with her going over letter sounds so she doesn't forget them or just stop completely? And she loves phonics workbooks, the basic ones where you circle all the things that start with "t", etc. Do I keep doing those with her? In our Curious George learns the ABC's book there is a picture of a cab with CAB above for George to sound out. I asked Anne-Catherine if she could sound it out and she said "/C/, /A/, /B/,...taxi" What is that about? Any ideas? Are there any other methods of teaching reading that might work for her? I really don't like 100 EZ lessons, so I don't think I'll try that with her. We've been using Phonics Pathways, but when she couldn't sound out the blends we're back to just reviewing sounds from flashcards, blocks, etc. I really don't know what kind of learner she is. She loves to sing and dance and can remember songs so I thought about something more visual or auditory, but I really don't want to spend $$ on a program if all she needs is more time. So, as you can see from my rambling, I just don't know what to do!

Hi Jennifer,
I hate to repeat too much from other forums, but you might want to check out the "A few of my favorite things" thread. I think it's in the fireside chat forum? A few of us have really enjoyed the Leapfrog dvd's for our beginning readers (and even the younger who are simply learning their letters and sounds). Your daughter should be past Letter Factory now. But Word Factory and Code Word Caper might be helpful.

By the way, these dvds are not a reading program, but inexpensive supplementary dvds. They run about $10 each and I got my first ones at Walmart.

Thanks! I will look for them. Do they work well if you don't have the Leap pad system?

I found them at Mentura.com (we've been members for about one year) so we can preview them before purchase.

Jennifer, this is priceless! This story should go in her baby book.

I have had all types of readers, but I think the best thing is to keep doing what you are doing, give her a lot of everything she loves, keep encouraging her, read many easy (and not so easy) books while pointing to the words, and remember that she is still extremely young to be reading. She'll probably pick it up before you know it!
