Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

approach for LA might look like for a 5th grader and a 3nd grader. Here is what I'm thinking:

dictation daily - would include spelling practice and grammar
copywork - one selection a week
various writing assignments

I would have to use shorter, simpler selections for the 3nd grader, but her work would be about the same. Am I missing anything? I can let go of our Easy Grammar program easier than I can let go of our Spelling workbook - everything is so sequential and logical in there. It seems to help the kids make connections to have a list of words that follow similar spelling rules. Any encouragement there? Other ideas? I am a CM wanna-be, but by nature, I'm more type-A and like to see those workbooks get done! Thanks.

Marianne, I really like reading through Penny Gardner's website for ideas. If you look on the sidebar she has a nice language arts page that might help.

Don't forget the core importance of reading good, living books and simply talking about them. Your discussions with the kids *are* narrations, even if you don't write them down.

I echo Karen's input. Though we may try a bit of Bravewriter this summer (we've been using bits and pieces from it but sporadically too).

I haven't even really begun Spelling -- my boys are 5th and 3rd grader too. I've just been correcting them as we go along.... perhaps we need to work on vocabulary, though. A few weeks ago, my 10-yo goes, "Hey, they've got an oblivion!!" -- he meant "pavilion".
