Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am totally at a loss for what to choose for my dd who will be 6th Grade next school year.

This year she did a structured program with a lot of grammar and very structured writing. She is very creative and imaginative and wants more freedom and "scope for the imagination". I do not think we necessarily need to do a very structured grammar this year again. She wants to write a lot.

I do not know whether narration, copywork and dictation are sufficient for 6th Grade. I am still trying to figure out whethr I need one of the following:

- Bravewriter
- IEW
- Wordsmith
- Some kind of grammar program

Thanks for any advice you may have.

All you need is Lingua Mater by Margot Davidson. It is fabulous!!!! It has the grammar worked into a weekly writing program. Each week there is a gorgeous poem or a classic painting or a short narration to study and toward the end of the week the student is asked to write something of the same genre (with a lot of guidance if they need it). I cannot say enough good things about it. I only wish there were about 5 other books like this on different levels. We finished it and wanted more! But it sounds like your daughter would be a perfect candidate for this marvelous grammar and writing resource.

Thank you for the Lingua Mater recommendation. I had been going to post - asking opinions on it. I am hoping I will get to look at it at the homeschooling conference in June.

Hi Marilyn,
My 7th grader is currently completing Lingua Mater in one year. Next year I plan for my then 6th grader to begin it and complete it the next year in 7th grade, as CHC recommends. If we ever get together this summer, you are welcome to look at it!

Thanks Irene. I am definitely going to consider this. I think Abby would love it. Do you do any other LA with this - eg spelling/grammar?

Hopefully we WILL get together before #5 arrives!

The grammar is coming directly from Lingua Mater. I bought her Wordly Wise again this year, but she doesn't do any of the workbook pages. She just studies the word list for vocabulary and spelling and takes a test each week or so. That is the only spelling she does anymore.

I agree with Irene....somewhere along the line "spelling" morphs into a study of vocabulary.

Helene - I want to thank you for posting the recommendation for Lingua Mater. I was in need of a program for my almost 12 year old 6th grade daughter. I ordered this program, received it yesterday and I think it will be just perfect! Many, many thanks!
