Tim,
Would you take a look at Alice's post in the Liturgical Year section? I'm guessing that the cut and paste from Word resulted in the extra symbols? It's so much easier to do something long and detailed like that in Word. What are the guidelines for uploading document files?

yes, the extra symbols are a side-effect of the cut-and-paste from Word. if the author catches this after posting, it is easy (tho a pain) to go back and edit the post to remove them.
at present, only .txt, .zip and .doc files are permitted, and the max file size is 250K.

Tim asked me to cut and paste my original Easter Vigil post so we can all see how to avoid this in the future. As I told Tim and Elizabeth, the strange codes did not appear on my computer, and I wouldn't have known it was a problem if I hadn't heard back from others.
Here is my original post:
...snip...
Gennady Spirin’s masterful illustrations will help me to begin a conversation with the children about the darkness the world would be in without Jesus. We will discuss the sorrow of the Crucifixion and the sadness of the apostles and Blessed Mother at that moment of darkness, along with the hope that they had as faithful followers of Our Lord and believers in His promises. I will extend the conversation to include the meaning of Ash Wednesday, a time when Christians enter into a spirit of repentance and remember that we are dust, but that our hope is in Jesus.
We will discuss why the Easter Vigil has no introductory rites (because it is part of the three-day-long liturgy of the Paschal Triduum) and learn about the beautiful “Service of Light.” I will tell them about my memories of Easter Vigils growing up (including one instance when the smoke alarms went off in church!) and read them the greeting and the “Blessing of the Fire.” These prayers will make up the third page of our books.
...snip...

well, i know at least the cause of the problem:
Quote:
Microsoft's word processing, spreadsheets, and page layout software uses what Microsoft calls "smart quotes." Straight double quotation marks are automatically replaced with the fancier opening and closing curly quotation marks. Other non-standard characters are also supported, including:- Long dashes
- Curly single quotes
- Trademark symbol
True Type fonts in Microsoft Windows systems use a superset of ISO Latin-1 to get these special characters. In basic Latin-1, the numeric characters 128-159 are left open, but Windows systems use them to create custom characters that usually are only visible on Windows operating systems - and even there, display isn't always consistent. |

the "smart quotes" are the culprit here in Alice's post, tho i can easily see the em dash coming into play as well. now, i just need to find a way to detect and replace them when a post is made...

Tim, are the problematic codes visible in my post above? I can't see them from here.

Yes, they're visible. Interesting that you don't see them.

It is so odd that I do not see them. I'm a bit concerned because this will prevent me from taking care of problems when they arise. I have some narrations I'd like to post tonight, but they are in word documents, and I intended to cut and paste.

what i find odd is that you don't see them in the context of the browser. if you go back to your post on page 1 of this thread, where you wrote, "Here is my original post," you will see that i cut out most of it, leaving only 2 paragraphs. the 1st paragraph should read, "Gennady Spirina's..." but what we are seeing is a few strange characters in place of the apostrophe. this happened everywhere you had used an apostrophe or quotation marks.
you can prevent it from happening again by doing the following:- open Word
- select "AutoCorrect Options..." from the "Tools" menu
- select the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab
- uncheck ["Straight quotes" with "smart quotes"]
note that these are instructions for Word 2002 -- they might differ slightly if you are using a different version, but the option should still be in there somewhere.
as forum moderator, you also have the ability to upload the Word doc to the server so that others can download it and view it with your original formatting.
hope this helps...
