My nine year old son has a $25 gift certificate to Border's. He is very much into nature, loves to flip through reference books. He has read all of Redwall, so he has a particular interest in small mammals at the moment. We are surrounded by woods, so various nature study books might be good.
Any recommendations for must-have nature books? I want to have some ideas before taking him to the store.

Arnosky books
The Take-Along Guides from Northword Press.
Audubon's First Field Guides- this one on mammals might be good since he is into small mammals at the moment.
Peterson's First Guides - like this one on urban wildlife

Golden Guides are also wonderful for the younger ones. The books are small (easy to carry), inexpensive and easy to use.

The "One Small Square" books are good. He may also be ripe for Hatchet, River, and the other Brian books. My ds loves them and they really inspire him to go outside in the woods.

Our kids have this journal and love it.
Your post inspired me to explore the rest of the site, and I just purchased a nature outing bag for each of the kids for Easter. I'm so excited! Thank you, Mary!

Ugh! We just got back from Border's. They have NO selection of nature books! They have more books about professional wrestling. 
Thanks for the suggestions, though. I am keeping a wish list on Amazon for future reference.
Benjamin ended up with an animal encyclopedia from DK with intenet links through google to learn more about each topic. It is a good fit for him. But I was disappointed not to find some of your recommendations.

Molly, we don't have a Border's here, but we do have a Barnes and Noble. B&N will order specific books for me and will call me when they arrive. Then if I look at them and don't like them, I'm under no obligation to buy. They just send them back to their warehouse or wherever. If I do want them, I get to use my educator's discount on them. Maybe Borders would do the same.

What a shame, Molly. In the giant B&N in Lincoln Center, they have a great selection, but in most others one must hunt.
There are some surprising results, though, for the undaunted hunter!
I know it's too late for that gift certificate, but here's a quick list of some "new favorites" in the nature picture book genre (my kids are more or less beyond the PB age, but if you're looking for me in the bookstore or library, you'll find me browsing there):
Nature Science (I took a class in writing for children from the author...I have not seen this new book yet).
Season to Season
Looking for Seabirds
Nature in the Neighborhood and Pond (I see these books as the logical follow-up to the One Small Square books).

I got the medium-sized one which snaps around the waist. (I hope it fits my little kiddos.) It's called The Original Pajaro Field Bag.

Ahhhhh! The Amazon wish list. Mine hasn't seen the low side of 500 wishes in ages. I put all my library ideas there, my gift ideas there, etc. But it's WAY out of control.
