I don't really know where to post this. We are planning the garden. I was wondering if anyone has grown these tomatoes? I know they are supposed to be the best for canning, but they aren't available here. I need to order seeds soon if I want to plant them. Anyone??

Jennifer, I've never grown them, but I found them in The Cook's Garden catalog. 
Also, my March Martha Stewart came in the mail and it has an article all about "Savoring Paste tomatoes." Are those the same as canning?

Jennifer, if you can wait until tomorrow, I'll have time tonight to check my stash of seeds and see if I have these. I know someone sent me something like 33 different tomato seeds last year... San Marzano may just be in there. Just in case it isn't, are you open to getting other "tomato paste" tomato seeds?

Wow, I dont know. I'm not as experienced with canning tomatoes. We usually eat them too quickly. My son stands out in the vines, which are taller than he is, and he just plucks them right off to eat. I am going to have to go get that MS though. My subscrption has been up for a few months. That's funny that you mention it though, because it was MS who had the orignal article about San Marzanos. Thanks for replying and for the source link!

Jennifer, yes! I have tons of seed. Haven't traded this year but have been doing it for a few years now. Hi Jennifer, I found the seeds! Yes, I do have San Marzano; and I also have a few seeds of Costoluto Florentino I can send. Also Costoluto Genovese, and some organic roma tomato from Burpee and another roma type from "Paquebot" at Gardenweb. Let me know if you want any or all of these, and PM me your addy so I can mail them tomorrow.

I haven't grown them but one of my seed catalogs -- which one? I can't remember -- says they are a very good paste tomato and that they're pretty dry, not juicy. I'm trying to figure out what seeds to order myself, but I'm looking at tomatoes with names like "Manitoba" and "Glacier".  Last year I planted all heirlooms and hardly any had time to ripen! I sure hope we have a warmer, drier summer this year.

Angela,
That is so interesting. I can't plant the larger varities because they split in the summer heat. We actually have two tomato seasons down here - March to June and then late July - November. Let me know what performs well for you!
