I'm referring to Macbeth's description of a place to do nature study:
close by
free
naturalist available
accessible for children
We live not five minutes away from Gulf Islands National Seashore-Davis Bayou! We went and explored for the first time today. We participated in a marsh discovery walk (really partcipated-went down into the water with nets to see what we could find). It was great! The girls are working on their nature notebook drawings and narrations so I'll post those and let them tell you all about what we saw. But this place is wonderful, lots of trails, lots of nature! And a great visitor's center with a wonderful children's area, art exhibits, bookstore and PARK RANGERS who don't mind answering a ton of questions! I'm so excited! (Can you tell? ) I think this will be the place for our weekly nature study-now I have no more excuses to not do it!

We are just starting with narration and nature study. Combined the two today-here is the narration and hopefully the nature notebook drawing will be with it! (Thank you, Elizabeth!) This is from Anne-Catherine, who is five, and has to be encouraged to speak in complete sentences.
"Today I caught a crab but it got away. Ranger Melissa showed me some fish. I saw pokey fish, they were silver and very pretty. I saw a boy crab and a girl crab. Girl crabs have a pyramid on their tummies, that's how I know a boy from a girl. I got to hold a bucket of little shrimp and showed them to everybody. I went into tall, poky, sharp grass to go into the marsh bayou. Allyson sat down in the bayou and got all wet and muddy."
From Bethany, who is four:
" Today I saw a girl crab and a boy crab, and fishes. We went into the bayou. I caught a crab, a shrimp, and a fish in a net. A marsh is not a swamp because it only has grass and not trees. I got to touch a shrimp, too, and a fish. I touched them with one gentle finger. They were very soft. Ally caught a baby crab."
I'm a pretty proud mom! And now, if we are ever wondering the sex of the blue crab, Anne-Catherine will be able to figure it out. FYI, the male has a phallic shaped tail tucked up into his tummy, but thankfully the word phallic wasn't used today.

I will never, EVER catch up on my e-mail, this BB, or anything until August!!
Jennifer, your mountain day place sounds perfect. I hope you spend many happy hours there. Great narrations, BTW...made me want to get out my waders!
Anyone else found a perfect "mountain day" place?

We just returned from a mountain WEEK spot. Well, we could go for just a weekend... Winter Park, CO was beautiful this time of year. In just a few days of hiking and fishing we saw black bear, mule dear, marmots, fox, a tremendous variety of birds (including a bald eagle), moose cow with newborn calf, beavers, trout, porcupine, golden mantle ground squirrels... Then there were the horses, and sled dogs... All that and add in a snow ball fight in June, boating, driving along an old stage coach trail and rail road line. We also spent 1/2 day exploring an 1874 era stage coach stop turned museum... There was a ranger in town but who had time to talk to him??? We'll spend the next week looking up animals in our field guide and encylopedia, and taking down some narrations (thanks for the reminder!). Maybe next time we'll pay more attention to the flora.
