Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi ladies,

I'm beginning to map out my 13 yod's freshman year for next year, and am curious about what biology texts/resources might work best. She's a great reader, but truly dislikes sciences and math in general. We do have a professional microscope and I'm planning on using that if we can find some good slide sets to go along with it. I've found a few websites, but would like to know if I'm missing a good text out there. Also, she'll need to do a lab, so I'm hoping we can get it out of the way with the microsope labs this year.

Thanks for your help!

Laurel, take a look at The Way Life Works. It's written for non-bio majors, but gives a nice graphic overview of bio. I'd supplement with some living books and articles, but for the most part, it's as good as a text gets. (My opinion, of course )

I like that book, too. My only complaint is that although the cartoon drawings are cute, clear, and clever, somtimes a photo of the real thing would be nice. I'd supplement with some great biological photography books or DVD's as well as living books and articles as MacBeth recommends. But overall it is a winner.

Thanks MacBeth & Theresa,

The book DOES look great. Before I buy it, do either of you know if it's considered a high school text, or at least a resource for a self designed course? One of the diploma programs we are looking at requires high school appropriate resources. If it's written for middle/high school students, I can use it as a text. If not, I'll have to design the course myself and just use it as a resource. Any input would be appreciated.

By the way, I love some of your other resources on your site MacBeth! I'll be checking back there when I go to plan for my 8 yr old's fourth grade!

Blessings,
Laurel in PA

It was written for college non-bio majors. I wonder how they count college texts?
