Thank you, thank you for the heads up. I just checked with our local observatory and they are indeed doing a viewing. How cool is that! I reserved spots for our family. He did say you guys in New York aren't going to have much of a view. It looks good here and even better further west. Thanks again, MacBeth.

Yes, Macbeth -- thanks so much for the heads up. MaryM mentioned this today and we're going to go to the Chamberlin Observatory on Wed to watch the event ....
This is so cool -- I just LOVE homeschooling!

Too cool, MacBeth!
I tossed it up on my blog as I was just typing about some wild phenomena we've witnessed lately. All in good fun...

Just got back from our trip to the observatory. Great viewing experience. A beautiful, clear day - 80 degrees in Denver today!
It's currently 3 PM MST - There are still a couple of hours of viewing left - here is live feed of the transit. If you see this in time, check it out.
And an activity to make a model of the transit.

I was wondering how that went. We had rain or thick cloud cover all day also. Seems we have that at just about every interesting celestial event

What made us all feel good about seeing it today was that the folks at the Observatory said the next tranist would be in 2016 -- and probably wouldn't be visible in our area of the country (because of the time of day and angle of sun).
All I know is that the kids and adults had a great time using a 112 year old telescope to see a 13-times-per-century event! I have a few pix at my blog showing the observatory and the telescope. I tried to get a picture of the live-feed that showed Mercury starting it's trip across the sun, but I just got a white projector screen -- but then we got to go look through the telescope and it was all worthwhile!
Thanks to MacBeth for letting us know, and MaryM for ascertaining that the Observatory could show it to us.....

It was phenominal! Also there were a dozen astronomy buffs on the lawn sharing their telescopes; what a variety of different views!! First time I've looked at the sun through a telescope. Some had the special lenses that showed the sun as orange and they all showed at least one sunspot. Incredible!
