Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Two springs ago, Paul planted an avocado seed in a big pot full of soil. He left it outside, in a quiet corner of our yard. I found it in the fall and brought it inside for the winter, and Libby named it Avogadro. It was about 18 inches tall, and it did not grow a bit over the winter, though I kept it in the sun room.

This spring, I put it out in the sunniest part of the garden. It grew and grew. It even sprouted a branch! It is now about 4 feet high, and since the weather is getting cold again, I brought it inside.

At some point, it will need to be transplanted. Anyone out there own an avocado tree? How big will it get? Will I have to ship it to someone in the south?

Say it isn't so! [Note the disappointed avocado emoticon.]

My question is how soon before I can come over for guacamole?

Actually, with the high ceilings in your sunny living room...

info here, macbeth, from the wintersowing lady herself, trudi at gardenweb

-- my late grandfather had a small part of his farm planted with avocadoes -- those were some REALLY tall trees, maybe 20 feet? of course, this was in the tropics... my mom and her siblings used to climb those trees to pick the fruit. oh, and we LOVE avocado SWEET -- we make it into shakes and sherbets and ice creams. yum.

MacBeth,
If you were hoping I'd volunteer, I'm afraid I must disappoint you.

I'm the one whose dh says he's relieved I don't neglect his children the way I neglect our plants.

Your beloved plant wouldn't last two weeks down here.

Just what I needed, Stef! Thanks! I would encourage everyone to try this--it's so easy!

Oh, Cay! I did think that this would make a lovely shrub in front of Cajun Cottage (under the Avocado??)!!

Unfortunately, like Cay, I do not trust myself with the care of houseplants.

We Cottage gals are letting you down today, aren't we? Thank goodness for Stef!

MacBeth,

Unfortunately, your avocado tree won't survive your winters. How about a new home present for Lissa. Avocado's thrive in So. California, unless that is you happen to live in the high desert, they don't like the cold.

God Bless

Sorry, can't help you, Macbeth.

But as a side: I LIVE for guacamole, can not have enough of it...Send Avogadro my way. (Wait...don't....I would kill him .)

Enjoy him!

Hmm... I think even at Cay's it would have to be brought in at some point. My parents had a potted avocado when we lived in Baton Rouge. The tree came in when it got very cold. They garage saled it when they left Baton Rouge for Miami. (No need for potted avocados there when they've got enormous ones in the ground all around them!) The good news is that even in a pot, it bore fruit fairly quickly -- so much fruit (5 or 6 of the large green ones all at once), that it had to be propped up on all sides. The poor tree was barely an inch thick at the time.

I can't help you with the tree, but I just have to say I LOVE the name! I giggle every time I see the topic line! Yes, I am easily amused...
