Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

who has taught keying!? We are going to the zoo tomorrow (Friday), and I thought this might be the time to have the kids (7,8,9) make up some keys. I am not sure how to introduce it. I am the least scientific person I know and though this idea looks perfect, I can't figure out how to communicate this in a way they will understand. Do we just start at the first animal in the zoo and say ok, if it has fur it is a seal, next animal...if it has fur and isn't a seal then___???

Help!

Thanks!

Oh, I have! I love to have the kids key out there finds...I usually begin with 9 or 10 year olds.

I'd have the kids start with mammals, and just key them for the day. Return for birds or reptiles, etc.

I'd start like this (done quickly, with errors, no doubt ):

1. Does it swim?
a. yes, go to 2.
b. No, go to (let this be blank until you are sure where to send the next key).

2. does it have legs?
a. no, go to 3.
b. yes, go to (again, blank)

3. Does it have flippers?
a. yes, go to 4.
b. no, go to 5.

4. Does it have external ears?
a. yes: Sea Lion.
b. no: Seal

5. Is it over 20 feet?
a. yes: (big whale)
b. no: (small whale or porpoise/dolphin)

6. (add "6" to #1 b and continue)...

Thanks MacBeth! We are on our way out the door. I'm bringing a notebook and some index cards/post-it notes. We'll see how this goes.
