Can anyone recommend some good living books on raptors? We just had the great good fortune to attend a falconry class and are interested in learning more about this incredible sport. We were able to fly the birds off our gloves, do "obstacle courses" with them and so on, it was amazing. Now, looking for books for the children, the only book I can think of is "My Side of the Mountain". Surely there're more out there. Any ideas???

PS I did find one other book called "Eagle Dreams", which was very interesting, tho it's more for teens and up. Can you believe eagles are used to hunt deer, WOLVES and snow leopards in Mongolia??? True!

There are sequels to My side of the mountain the second book focuses on Sam's sister Alice and her falcon On the Far side of the Mountain and the trilogy concludes withFrightful's Mountain

We have read the first two, they are fantastic and the children learnt alot about survival in the wilds as well as falconery.

Another couple we have are based in the Scottish highlands Greeka Eagle of the Hebrides and Grasson golden EAgle of the North.

Hawkwood by Jonathan Guy is set in England, a story of a Goshawk and his mate. And there is Thunderbolt the Falcon by CK Thompson set in Australia and this one is definetly out of date You may be able to find these through your library.

Don't forget picture books as well, I know when we did the Middle Ages we came across some picture books, sorry I can't remember the titles.

Thank you, all. I was practically WEANED on the "My side of the Mountain" trilogy, always glad to see a plug for these great books, but I had never heard of the others. Time to do some bookhunting!

My ds-13 read this last year and loved it when he was fascinated by raptors. It is individual short stories about different raptors but it's not just facts; it's more stories written from the bird's point of view (but not juvenile)
