We had the most wonderful walk yesterday at our local botanical gardens. We just happened to be there when the frogs were very busy mating! In this one section of one of the ponds there, there must have been a dozen frogs all feeling very romantic! The kids and I were fascinated! We saw three bullfrogs sitting on lilypads croaking away with their throats ballooned out. One male frog swam over to another one on the lilypad and knocked him off! The poor males were very busy competing as there were more males than females. The females were larger and brownish while the males were smaller and more green in color. All the females were taken already. A male would get on top of the females back. Coming from the female's body were very long strings of black thread which we guessed were the eggs. There were some white-ish strings which perhaps was the sperm?

Whenever I happen to witness animals mating, I am alway happy God made me human! Humans have much more fun! I always think the animals look so miserable.

Anyway, anybody know anything about frogs? I'd like to know what type of frog we saw and also if there are any good books geared for ages 3, 6, 10 and 12.

What a coincidence! I just took the kids last Friday to our local museum of natural history to see the frog exhibit they have there. We all enjoyed it very much. From your description and the frogs they had there I would guess you have American Bullfrogs.

We also saw the IMAX movie Bugs while there and that was very good, too. (first time ds 5 and dd 3.5 had ever been in a movie theater! I thought it might be overwhelming but they did OK)
