Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Maybe this is an oxymoron - but my "10th grader" wants to "do" biology this year. I am considering enrolling her in an outside class. I am not an unschooler (while I am an unschooling wanna be), or classical, or all CM -our years pretty much form based on our family's needs. I am simply looking for a more unschooling / independent path for my high schooleras an alternative to jumping into an outside obligation.
Not sure this makes ANY sense - but hopefully some of you wise women can share your ideas and experiences.
Thanks,

I am not an expert on unschooling either.   But I am TRYING to unschool.

It sounds like you want to avoid "doing" biology outside of the home?

From what I understand, the "unschooling" approach is to become aware of what your daughter wants and WHY she wants it.   How does your daughter want to do biology? What is her motivation? Like, if she is doing it for college prep, her approach might be different than if she just loves biology.

My oldest did not much like biology.   So to meet his goals for college prep, we used Apologia Biology as a spine and then used a lot of MacBeth's high school science booklist to enrich the Apologia. I think if I had to do it again I would have skipped the Apologia or perhaps used the money to buy some sort of biology reference book that he could delve into, since he did appreciate a systematic approach to learning.   WE also fit a lot of natural history into the curriculum -- we live in the Sierra mts and ecological diversity is in our own backyard.   So the biology ended up taking almost 2 years mixed in with all the other things, but we went light on memorizing terminology and heavy on personal observation and "living books".

I have heard of people taking biology classes online...

Does this help at all or answer what you were asking?

Edited to add: your subject line said Lab Science and MacBeth has this lab manual on her book list.   On her biology page there are some links to online dissections.

Right. I would also ask what are the goals for the class first. Is she going to have to pass the ACT subject test for college entrance, or does she just want a basic, sound biological understanding? My recommendations would vary widely depending upon either of those goals.

Thank you ladies - this is a great start! I do need to find out more specifics from my daughter about her goals and then delve in.

I can't really help - except to say that all my kids so far have avoided biology like the plague! lol!

But we have definitely done Physics and Chemistry - using the books and resources to suit us and not as a set course. We have found many online resoruces with guides and activities and I expect the same would apply for biology.

Let us know how it goes!
