I've decided to do an "All things tiny" study for science with my 5th grader for next year. Actually, it is something all the kids will work on together but I'm gearing it toward my 5th grader. I'm thinking about using Adventures with a Handlense and Adventures With a Microscope (by the same author) as spines. I've also decided that this will be the year to actually buy the microscope I have been thinking about for so long. My dd will be in 10th grade so I want a microscope that a highschool student can use, while at the same time being sturdy enough to handle 4 boys that will also be interested in using it. I'm thinking about this Home Microscope from Home Science Tools and I would love to know if any of you have experience with it and what your thoughts are. I would also be interested to know if there are any other books you would recommend for this study.

The Happy Scientist has a video series on using a microscope. I am planning to do a similar study with my oldest in 2015-16, so I'm watching this thread. There is a similar thread, or one that has a lot of chatter about this theme. I will look if I get a chance.

A World in a Drop of Water by Alvin and Virginia Silverstein (from Dover) is a great little read for that kind of study.
And we love the Happy Scientist!

I think that you have to have a subscription to see the video, but the microscope he recommends is the Brock Magiscope. They showed his video on the Homeschool Buyers Coop when they were selling the Brock last year. I have been watching for it since.
I am personally planning to get the magiscooe as I think it will hold up better for little ones and then perhaps investing in a model more like the one you linked for high school.

I agree it is best to get a high quality/sturdy one - it will serve you well over the years. Kris(AtHomeScience) regularly published a review of microscopes for homeschoolers. Those are on her blog - microscope reviews. I have found it helpful. She provides very specific thoughts on the various features offered and which she thinks are most important. She also posted really helpful info in this thread from a few years ago - Castle Heights Biology Lab - microscope?
Using these reviews and PMing her for additional thoughts, I decided on this Sonlight microscope several years ago for high school biology. We have been really happy with it. It has the "extras" that really make it a more useful tool but for a reasonable price considering how much it would cost other places. We love having the mechanical stage which it comes with. It is very similar to the one you linked to at Home Science Tools except the Home Science Tools one doesn't have the mechanical stage and has a disc diaphragm instead of iris (which Kris recommends). I could have added the mechanical stage to the Home Science Tools and the prices would have been similar (though the Sonlight one has gone up). We considered doing that but in the end went with Sonlight because I knew it would arrive sooner since they are local to us and I was in a hurry. All that to say they are very similar microscopes and we have been happy with ours.

This is a great thread! I also am planning a session of microscope work for the coming year and need to upgrade from the scope I have now.
I recently bought "A World in a Drop of Water" and "Adventures with a MIcroscope" and really like the looks of them. I will also be using the resources at the Happy Scientist site. 
I plan to kick it all off with a "How to think like a Scientist" as a read-aloud.
