KC suggested more soil and mulching. Which leads me to my question...what kinds of mulch are recommended? I've read pine bark mulch, which is the most abundant, is not ideal. Considering I have to buy my mulch somewhere, can you give me tips on something I can use for my front garden?

It won't look as pretty, but grass clippings are a great mulch. Pile them on, new upon old. When I had a smaller vegetable garden I had up to a foot of mulch and I never had to weed, but I don't have enough clippings for that now. Now I just pile them around the base of the plants. They'll work for flowers and herbs too.

If your town has a Christmas tree drop off program they might be giving away free pine tree mulch right about now.

Another great mulch, very natural, is fallen leaves. Basically any kind of stuff from the garden that's now dead (or dying) will work (I'm sure there's a technical name).

Also, check with your county -- ours collects and mulches all yard waste. You can come get it free during certain hours.

Pine needles worked well in our southern yard -- cheap and keep in the moisture to help trees get through our HOT summers.

Grass I can do, Leaves...well, we have no trees in our yard. Something we need to change, at least in the front. Our a/c bills are through the roof!

Pine needles from the tree that overhangs our lot we can do.

I'm wary of some of the free mulch we can get at our local dump...I've heard reports of poison ivy. Actually, my dad is extremely sensitive to poison ivy and has broken out from contact with the free mulch....so I don't want to introduce that in our yard. Does that sound picky or prudent? I'm not sure.

But I guess I should clarify my question: what looks good that the picky, snobby HOAs would approve of looks but works well for my plants?

My dh ordered a few yards of triple shredded mulch. Neither one of else can remember which type of wood it is.    I think your HOA and plants will be fine with that type of mulch.
