I found his site through someone's recommendation on here, and I think it's great.    My question is whether anyone has used his unit studies as their sole curriculum, not just as a supplement.

A lot of the site's resources aren't available until you subscribe, and I don't want to subscribe yet, because with a 12-month subscription, obviously I'd run out in the middle of next school year (we do a traditional school year). It's hard to judge how complete it is without being able to see everything, iykwim?

Next year I will have 5th, 3rd, and 1st graders homeschooling--is it appropriate for their ages?

I'll take a stab at this...

First, right now through the end of February the Homeschool Buyers Coop has a deal for The Happy Scientist. You can subscribe for a year for $10.
That is a bargain, since the price to subscribe will be going up to $30 per year in March.

I always look for this deal each year (it runs once or twice a year) and renew my subscription then.

Robert Krampf is very thorough and serious about science, in a fun way. I think his carefully written experiments and unit studies could indeed stand alone. He is writing with school standards in mind and gives hints for teachers on how to use his materials. There is also a "test yourself" area.

Definitely a fifth grader could do this- and you could let the 3rd and 1st ride along at their own levels.

I've had my eye on using all his resources for a geology study for awhile.
I have the book Geology Rocks that I would use with the Happy Scientist for even more hands on activities, which my kids love.

I find that studying rocks, etc can be very dull (for me, anyway ), but I'll be darned if Robert doesn't make it a lot of fun. We like the videos with his curious science cats "helping" him. Too funny.

We love Robert Krampf! I have not tried using it as our sole science curriculum, but I think it could be done since he is producing with state standards in mind. We get our membership through Homeschool Buyers Coop, and I have never regretted doing so. He explains things in a way my kids really get, and we all enjoy the bloopers. We all watch the videos (ages 12 to 4 years) and generally do the experiments together. Sometimes the olders will do one on their own that strikes their individual interest.

We tend to watch videos and try experiments randomly. For instance this past week we made egg geodes and tried the Knuckle Trick. My 7-yr-old was able to extrapolate from the Knuckle Trick video (dealing with center of gravity and stability) and begin ice skating on his own--away from the wall--when we went this past weekend. It was exciting for him and for me!   

For the grade levels you mentioned, I think it could work the way you intend.

Thanks for this! I figured that at $10, we couldn't lose, so I subscribed us. Hopefully this will lift us out of our winter doldrums now, as well as providing some expansion to our science plans for next year.
