One of my dd wants to teach a "Bird Camp" this summer. In the past, we've taken a break halfway thru our homemade camp programs with a short movie, or part of a movie, pertinant to the subject at hand (eg last year we watched episodes of "Chased by Dinosaurs" during Dinosaur Camp). Any suggestions for bird-related movies (other than Hitchcock's "The Birds"...just kidding!) We've thought of "March of the Penguins", the DK "Birds" movie, "Hoot" (has anyone seen this, is it good?), and the Magic School Bus "Taking Flight" cartoon...but I'm racking my brain for other options.
There WAS a movie trailer I saw years ago about some girl teaching geese to fly, does this ring any bells with anyone? It was a children's movie, that much I remember (I think ).
Thanks, Kelly in FL

PS I just saw the thread on "Hoot". Lots of great owl info there, too! Thanks.

That would be Fly Away Home.
What about Winged Migration - it's a documentary. Very amazing photography.

Let me second Mary's suggestion of "Winged Migration" -- altho it's a documentary my kids (even the older ones) were riveted by the photography, music and the "story line" of following the birds through their various migrations. It was great!
Trumpet of the Swan is a cute version of the book (and sort of close to the original story) -- lots of interesting info about Trumpeter Swans.
Also, see if you can get hold of the National Gallery's video about John James Audubon -- since it's summer you might not have any truoble getting the loan. It's a great, short documentary about Audubon and has wonderful shots of his pictures....

I loved Fly Away Home. The parents are seperated and the mom and daughter are in a car wreck in the very beginning and the mom dies. The car wreck in the rain is so well done with beautiful music and the rain, that it made a huge impression on me when I was a teen getting ready to drive...So the dad moves the daughter across the world and they have to adjust to each other and the sorrow of losing the mom - the geese help bring them together. This movie is gorgeously produced and the support the eccentric inventor dad gives his daughter is wonderful. You have geese? Those geese have to learn to fly?? How can we teach them that skill?
As a teen I loved it, as an adult I still love it. It might not be the right movie for another family - mom died, daughter gets nose stud, skips school to teach geese to fly - but I like it!

Don't forget the Coot Club, which could be called a beginners guide to eco-terrorism (with consequences, of course).

Thanks, all, great suggestions. I think we have all five days of camp covered, now!
If you have any wonderful tried-and-true Bird Activities that you care to recommend, I'm all ears

Kelly,
Sadly this one is oop, but Paper Birds that Fly is a great "paper airplane" book where you actually make models of the real birds. They fly really well using the heavier than normal pages in the book. The book also discusses flight, how birds fly, etc. Well worth the search to find a remaindered copy.
Origami is of course a great thing to do for birds' study.
Practicing bird calls, using Stokes Field Guide is pretty fun -- and the kids learn alot! Dh used to teach middle school science and had the kids trained to hear and imitate many of the calls!

This is a classroom activity, but it can be modified for a small group. If the gummy worms put you off, use rubber bands, but remind the kids not to eat them!
Eat Like a Bird: Set out gummy worms and construction paper beaks. To make the beaks, fold a piece of yellow construction paper three times and then cut a triangle from the folded side alone. It will open up in a diamond shape. Staple each side and draw lines so it resembles a beak. Remind students how birds use their beaks to eat, and that they will practice this by holding the beaks with their hands and feeding themselves like a mother bird feeds her young.
I like to make the beaks in different shapes, using bird photos as models--finch beaks, heron beaks, pelican beaks, etc.

MacBeth -- this sounds great. And we love gummy worms around here! You could put the gummys in the "dirt" using cookie crumbs and chocolate pudding....sounds fun AND messy -- two things my kids love!
