I would like to purchase some earthworms for our compost pile. Does anyone know of a reliable source? The nursery around here no longer sells them and I was hesitant to order online without a recommendation.
Thanks.

If you build it, they will come.
Or, rather, if you pile it up, they will come! Just keep it damp.

I have the pile and it has been damp. I suspect the six robin's nests in the yard as well as the possums as culprits in the depletion of my earthworm population. I found a few years ago that about 500 red wigglers made wonderful compost in a very short time.

Oh, Mary Ellen! Aren't opossums just the ugliest?
I am not sure where to buy any worms, but I'd like to know. I hope someone out there can help? Or I could bring some to you...how many do you need?
(I like the juxtaposition of the shamrock and the MacBeth tartan as we post )

What about trying a place that has them for fishing? We have a small place here where you can get them by the deli container....maybe?

That's what I was going to suggest-just look for a sign that says "live bait"

Thank you Donna Marie and Theresa - that is a great idea. Since I live two minutes from the bay and we have bait stores all around that would be a good first try.
I won't be doing much gardening this summer but I do want to try to maintain the compost heap as muchas possible.
Thanks for the suggestions!

You are so sweet, like you have nothing else to do but drive out here and deliver worms. Thank you so much for the kind offer. I am going to try the bait stores.

Think of it as great Celtic minds thinking alike.

Back when I was student teaching in P.S., we did a unit study on worms and composting and created our own worm bin. We just purchased Red Wigglers from a local fishing tackle store. It was such a great unit, with so many levels of learning. There's a fabulous unit-study book called Worms Eat Our Garbage with lots of fun science/math activities. What an ambitious mom-of-twins you are!
