Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The girls found a hickory tussock caterpillar the other day. We caught it, looked it up, and put it in our bug aquarium with a bunch of fresh maple leaves. Less than 24 hours later it was spinning its cocoon! So, now we have this cocoon in our big aquarium. I know they overwinter in the pupa stage and then emerge in the spring. How should I care for this thing until spring? Right now it is in the house, but once it gets cold shouldn't we leave it outside? I figure being in the warm house all winter could confuse it. We would really love to see this successfully emerge as a moth. Thanks for any help/suggestions!

Beth

We've had failures and successes with moths emerging from cocoons. Try to keep the conditions as much like outside as possible. Humidity and temperature are important. What has worked best for us is to put the cocoon outside in a mesh container (like butterfly house or an enclosure made of mosquito screening). We try to find a place close to the house on the ground. The bottom of the container should allow water to pass through so that the cocoon isn't flooded. We surround and cover the cocoon with whatever it would have surrounded itself with in the wild (dirt, leaves).

Some good information here.
